A lot of truth to all this. I will say that my section is mostly filled with baseball people who come for their love for baseball. Still some who do the double-fisted beer runs every other inning, then the bathroom runs the rest of the way. I will say that the crowd has mostly acknowledged great defensive plays by those coming to bat in ensuing innings. So, the baseball IQ is improving, in my opinion. In general, the crowd is inflated by good play. Last night was totally deflating and you could feel all the energy start to deflate from the first batter who was hit and the 2 gift runs allowed.
It’s exhausting to watch the same scenario keep playing out weekend after weekend. Tons of stolen bases that lead to free runs along with the yips errors that will apparently keep happening. It’s so deflating to see your hopes dashed every weekend from issues that are correctable, yet won’t be corrected because of reasons which the decision-makers choose.
Great post. Agree 100%. Blaming the fans is always the first thing people do when things turn sour. I’m not here to say we should start tar and feathering the players (because I’m not) I’m just saying it’s one mediocre regular season the year after the national title and Tennessee fans aren’t the only ones that act how many posters here describe. It’s just we’re isolated to our own anecdotal perspective, which makes it look bad.
For example, the claim that Tennessee fans are only there to “be seen” and not enjoy the game can also be said for basically any other aspect of life. I went to see a movie last night instead of watching the game, and I don’t think I have ever been to a theater with more people getting up and down to get concessions or go to the restroom in my entire life and I’m an avid movie goer. It’s getting worse by the year. I get kneed in the back of my chair at least a dozen times and I heard people talking throughout the movie and acting like they were at a social event not a movie.
I think whether it’s the Tennessee baseball game or a movie or any other public thing, society is just trending towards encouraging people to have short attention spans and instant gratification. Much like how some posters on here are questioning why some people even come to the game to not watch, I was questioning how or why a short 2-hour run time movie had as much activity with people getting up and down as it did. I just think this is where we are now as a society and it’s not reflective of any one person or type of fan.
