The Official #11 Vandy @ #15 Tennessee Series Thread (Fri. 5/9 5:30PM EDT SEC Network) (Sat. 5/10 5PM EDT ESPN2) (Sun. 5/11 3PM EDT ESPN2)

A lot of truth to all this. I will say that my section is mostly filled with baseball people who come for their love for baseball. Still some who do the double-fisted beer runs every other inning, then the bathroom runs the rest of the way. I will say that the crowd has mostly acknowledged great defensive plays by those coming to bat in ensuing innings. So, the baseball IQ is improving, in my opinion. In general, the crowd is inflated by good play. Last night was totally deflating and you could feel all the energy start to deflate from the first batter who was hit and the 2 gift runs allowed.

It’s exhausting to watch the same scenario keep playing out weekend after weekend. Tons of stolen bases that lead to free runs along with the yips errors that will apparently keep happening. It’s so deflating to see your hopes dashed every weekend from issues that are correctable, yet won’t be corrected because of reasons which the decision-makers choose.

Great post. Agree 100%. Blaming the fans is always the first thing people do when things turn sour. I’m not here to say we should start tar and feathering the players (because I’m not) I’m just saying it’s one mediocre regular season the year after the national title and Tennessee fans aren’t the only ones that act how many posters here describe. It’s just we’re isolated to our own anecdotal perspective, which makes it look bad.

For example, the claim that Tennessee fans are only there to “be seen” and not enjoy the game can also be said for basically any other aspect of life. I went to see a movie last night instead of watching the game, and I don’t think I have ever been to a theater with more people getting up and down to get concessions or go to the restroom in my entire life and I’m an avid movie goer. It’s getting worse by the year. I get kneed in the back of my chair at least a dozen times and I heard people talking throughout the movie and acting like they were at a social event not a movie.

I think whether it’s the Tennessee baseball game or a movie or any other public thing, society is just trending towards encouraging people to have short attention spans and instant gratification. Much like how some posters on here are questioning why some people even come to the game to not watch, I was questioning how or why a short 2-hour run time movie had as much activity with people getting up and down as it did. I just think this is where we are now as a society and it’s not reflective of any one person or type of fan.

It seems like last year our players on numerous occasions tried to get the crowd going by motioning the crowd to stand and cheer , I’ve not seen that as much with this team either

Losing the Kentucky series has ended up being bigger than we thought
Don't forget aTm and the shot we blew against LSU. You take advantage of those...and defending your home field in general...and we aren't backs against the wall today. On the other hand, this is as close as win or go home as you can get this side of the tournament. Now we will see what this team is really made of.

I joked Friday night that apparently a memo went out that I missed, that if you plan to get up often you’re assigned to section 216 (old E) row 6. My row has been a turnstile the last 2 seasons.

That’s good stuff, Mookie. I overheard a great conversation at the game last night from two people I did not know. It was a 50ish male and his 75-80 year old mother. She told another person next to her that her son brought her to this game because she told him she “didn’t want chocolate or flowers for Mother’s Day.“ She said she only wanted her son to take her to a Tennessee game and buy her a hot dog.

Love it. I’m glad some people are still going to games for the right reasons.

Love that.

Mookie I love your perspective and your posts 99.9% of the time and you’ve been around the block with this program for a long time. At the same time you’re “calling out” posters for dissing on other fans you’re calling this a mediocre season. A 40+ win regular season in this league in any year, let alone THIS year, is not remotely mediocre; it’s what normal success typically looks like. This has been the best league in baseball for 20 years and we added two top 15 teams to the Leviathan known as the SEC.

AVG SEC records:

Sully 18-12
DVH 17-13
Corbs 17-13
JJ 16-14
Bianco 15-15

Worst case we go 15-15 which is slightly below the avg record of some of the most elite coaches in baseball.

I’m mostly referring to “mediocre” in the sense of what the “casual” fans people keep blaming for the atmosphere would view this as. And it’s been “mediocre” in LNS, which I think is a fair assessment because this is the first time in the history of Vitello’s tenure that we’ve lost 3 SEC series at home, if I remember correctly. I know it’s at least the first time since COVID.

It’s been an up and down season like 2023 but with more downs than ups so far. My only point is that the atmosphere people seem to be so concerned with is likely affected by what the majority of the casual fans have viewed as below the standard they are used to. I don’t necessarily agree with it, but I think that has to do with what is going on.

It’s no different from the Heupel offense situation. There was significant grumbling and annoyance within the vocal portion of our fanbase this year about how Heupel has lost his fastball because we struggle to score. This was in a year where we went 10-2 and made the playoff for the first time ever. The offense and excitement was below the standard fans have been used to watching so they acted accordingly. I don’t think it’s much different here. I don’t think it’s even necessarily because Tennessee fans are “bad baseball fans” as we hear parroted by people a lot. I think it’s simply that people like to watch teams score touchdowns and score runs. When that stops happening, you get some people to check out whether fair or foul.
