The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

-Two black holes of recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015 that combined to produce about 4 SEC-caliber players and then a bunch of MAC/FCS level talent.

.

At this point, the best they can hope for is to fire Mason after this season, hire another Bobby Johnson who can stock the roster with 3* talent for the next 4 years while winning 2 games a year, fire him, and then get lucky and land another James Franklin.

Best case scenario: They are 4-5 years away from even being in contention of making a bowl game.

this is there problem, they should have kept Bobby Johnson,if Johnson was still there,at least they would have some decent players

all Franklin did was use what was there and then ran off,the first chance he got, what Franklin done was leave them in a recruiting black hole

and it will take years to get over him

They essentially traded 2 very terrible bowls for the chance to get Kiffined. They will not recover for a very long time because their next 3-5 years are sealed at a max of 4ish wins...something we've never managed to do.

It will forever be there problem. Any coach who does well there, which is defined by making a bowl, will be hired by a far better football program. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Their best hope is to get lucky and land a Rick Barnes hire and land a guy in the final stages of his career who can stabilize the program and go 6-6 every other year.

Honestly, both of you are correct. Any younger coach (like Skip Holtz for example) that got hired on would be eyeballed for a higher position if they started winning. Because let's face it, if they can make Vandy appear consistently at bowl games with the completely mediocre talent they have, imagine what could they do with a brand name P5 school.

But the "washed up" coach could come in and stabilize the program as well. Look what George O'Leary has done for UCF. While they aren't a powerhouse, they are a dangerous team that can bite you in the butt if you underestimate them.

I prefer they hire as inept a coach as possible myself.

Frankly, Vandy needs to come to terms with a few things:

- they will never be in contention for the national championship.
- they will never be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
- they will never be an upper echelon SEC team.
- they will never be a destination progr for coaches or players.

Now that being said, their ceiling is to make a bowl game every now and then (i.e. Their program goals begin and end at 6 wins). Vandy had a brief glimpse of glory. But just as fast as it happened, it was over. The problem is that Vandy fans thought the James Franklin era was the sign of a paradigm shift in college football. This lie was propagated by idiots like Clay Travis.

The reality is that Vanderbilt will never reach those heights again. It took a tremendous amount of luck for a series of events to occur that benefitted Vandy (Tennessee being down, cross division schedule against historically weak teams).

Instead of saying, "Wow, we're playing really well. This is exciting!" and recognizing the moment for what it was, Their fans chanted "Our state" and proceeded to sh** on UT. That's why UT fans have no mercy for those poindexters. Icarus has lost his wings and now we're cheering as he comes crashing back to Earth.

I wouldn't even care about them if they hadn't been such a-holes while we sucked. Now I look forward to the annual beat down just like I look forward to the Bama game.

And this is the main difference in Kentucky and Vandy (football wise at least)

Kentucky didn't let their initial start go to their heads last year. They got a good jump on their season without getting a 'tude about it. And even after UT lost, they wren't getting a big head about it.

But Vandy? Worst attitude ever. There are sore losers and sore winners. They've proved to be both.

Excellent post, perfectly said. I wish I could write as smoothly as you. Posters on tos should really wish they could write as well as you. For all the "we're better than you academically" crap they spew about Vols fans, a lot of them write like trash. Despite this superior intelligence of theirs, they also say and believe a lot of unrealistic things. For instance, talk of winning an SEC championship. Get out of town... any Vandy fan who calls Tennessee fans dumb, only to turn around and talk about Vandy competing for an SEC championship, someone should really ask them what the hell is their problem, as they're mental. There were Vanderbilt fans last season that made remarks about the stupidity of Tennessee fans but they themselves believed Vandy could compete to win the East. A team that would actually go on to finish 3-9 with 0 conference wins. Vandy fans who predicted that team to compete for the East, now that's dumb.

You're just spot on about their view of the program when they got a few wins as if they're going to make it big and that rather than enjoying it, they had little brother syndrome and relentlessly attacked UT. Prior to Franklin, I had usually pulled for Vandy since they're at a disadvantage in the SEC and not accustomed to winning. I no longer feel that way as their fans were and still are complete jerks. Instead of feeling bad that they're at a disadvantage, I laugh at them for it and take pleasure in watching their failing program. Would be great if SEC left it up to universities to decide how much they are willing to pay players in the future and it put an even bigger gap between Vanderbilt and the rest of the SEC. Make the gap so large that they're run out of the SEC. Tennessee continues playing them OOC and makes it their homecoming for every home game. The Vols then proceed to stomp on them like the FCS team they are. Make it so.

Pretty much. I work with several UK fans and I was talking up UK after their start more than they were. They kept saying they were waiting for the other shoe to drop and when they finished 5-7, they were hardly surprised nor made any excuses.

The 2 seasons under Johnson that Vandy started 4-0 and 5-0, Vandy fans were talking SEC Championship. I remember on Vandymania they had people saying they were upset that they might not get to play the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans because that year it was moved to Atlanta because of Katrina. I'm pretty sure that's the first time I got banned because I replied to that thread how utterly delusional they were being and how I bet they wouldn't even make a bowl. Sure they beat us that year, but I was right.

Soooo..... who is talented, exactly?

I think there are honestly less than 5 Vandy players who could even crack 2nd on the depth chart at UT. I don't say that because I hate Vandy, but because I truly believe it. Off the top of my head:

1) Nigel Bowden
2) Maybe Caleb Azubike if he actually applied himself?

Does anyone better acquainted with the Vandy roster have any other ideas? I could be missing somebody, but I really think the talent is just lacking.

Their RB Webb is decent. Jelks is okay. TE Scheu as well. He was their only weapon for a big stretch of last season.

and Scheu broke his leg the last wk of spring and had surgery. I heard he will might be back in time for week 1 but you gotta wonder how effective he will be the first few games back. But that could also be wishful thinking. I know bad lower leg breaks take a while.....see big charles. They are doomed without him being their go to guy. Actually, they are doomed regardless.
