-Two black holes of recruiting classes in 2014 and 2015 that combined to produce about 4 SEC-caliber players and then a bunch of MAC/FCS level talent.
.
At this point, the best they can hope for is to fire Mason after this season, hire another Bobby Johnson who can stock the roster with 3* talent for the next 4 years while winning 2 games a year, fire him, and then get lucky and land another James Franklin.
Best case scenario: They are 4-5 years away from even being in contention of making a bowl game.
this is there problem, they should have kept Bobby Johnson,if Johnson was still there,at least they would have some decent players
all Franklin did was use what was there and then ran off,the first chance he got, what Franklin done was leave them in a recruiting black hole
and it will take years to get over him
They essentially traded 2 very terrible bowls for the chance to get Kiffined. They will not recover for a very long time because their next 3-5 years are sealed at a max of 4ish wins...something we've never managed to do.
It will forever be there problem. Any coach who does well there, which is defined by making a bowl, will be hired by a far better football program. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Their best hope is to get lucky and land a Rick Barnes hire and land a guy in the final stages of his career who can stabilize the program and go 6-6 every other year.
Instead of saying, "Wow, we're playing really well. This is exciting!" and recognizing the moment for what it was, Their fans chanted "Our state" and proceeded to sh** on UT. That's why UT fans have no mercy for those poindexters. Icarus has lost his wings and now we're cheering as he comes crashing back to Earth.
Frankly, Vandy needs to come to terms with a few things:
- they will never be in contention for the national championship.
- they will never be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
- they will never be an upper echelon SEC team.
- they will never be a destination progr for coaches or players.
Now that being said, their ceiling is to make a bowl game every now and then (i.e. Their program goals begin and end at 6 wins). Vandy had a brief glimpse of glory. But just as fast as it happened, it was over. The problem is that Vandy fans thought the James Franklin era was the sign of a paradigm shift in college football. This lie was propagated by idiots like Clay Travis.
The reality is that Vanderbilt will never reach those heights again. It took a tremendous amount of luck for a series of events to occur that benefitted Vandy (Tennessee being down, cross division schedule against historically weak teams).

I wouldn't even care about them if they hadn't been such a-holes while we sucked. Now I look forward to the annual beat down just like I look forward to the Bama game.
And this is the main difference in Kentucky and Vandy (football wise at least)
Kentucky didn't let their initial start go to their heads last year. They got a good jump on their season without getting a 'tude about it. And even after UT lost, they wren't getting a big head about it.
But Vandy? Worst attitude ever. There are sore losers and sore winners. They've proved to be both.
Soooo..... who is talented, exactly?
SDS did an article on longest winning streaks in the SEC.
Vandy has their own section... for losses.
Longest winning streaks in SEC rivalries all-time
I think there are honestly less than 5 Vandy players who could even crack 2nd on the depth chart at UT. I don't say that because I hate Vandy, but because I truly believe it. Off the top of my head:
1) Nigel Bowden
2) Maybe Caleb Azubike if he actually applied himself?
Does anyone better acquainted with the Vandy roster have any other ideas? I could be missing somebody, but I really think the talent is just lacking.
Their RB Webb is decent. Jelks is okay. TE Scheu as well. He was their only weapon for a big stretch of last season.
