The meltdown that is happening on the Vandy message boards

Read on the Vandymania football forum this morning. Their program has really fallen this far:

"Men and Women tennis have beat UT handily this year - got to love it. Neither match close - total domination."

Do they have a thread worshiping Franklin on that board ?

They are now blaming Franklin for their RB and WR troubles. They say he missed on his evaluation of current players, and that's why they suck. It's hard to argue against that. They also said their current WR group as a whole would be lucky to get playing time on the OVC level. They all got stone hands and no speed. They say there isn't any play makers on the team. They claim Sims and Sherfield is the teams only hopes for a play maker to emerge.

They're all convinced their D is awesome, actually "nasty" was the word used. There one player that would start on most SEC teams is a TE named Scheu. He has broke his leg and is out for the foreseeable future. They have converted a 270 lb. DT to FB. They say he is agile and the real deal. They believe their team is full of gamers. They acknowledge their team is young, and lacks depth, but they expect to have a good year.

Evidently they have started calling Mason the "New Mason". They believe he has finally figured the whole head coaching position out. They think their new staff is a upgrade, and that their players are getting great individual coaching. They claim their OL is really good because they have good size and a lot of heart.

Vandymania is going to be entertaining this fall when they go 1-11. That whole board will turn on Mason and the idiot that runs Vandymania wont be able to ban everyone.

Yeah, I know. They also created a list of coaches most likely to get fired after this season. Stoops was #1, Butch was #2 on it, followed by Mason at 3.

Ole Yates may just have to shut down VandyMania, all 7 of their posters will be going crazy after they get what's coming to them.

One poster said Butch was no better of a X's and O's coach than Mason on the field.

I about choked on my breakfast when I read that the Vandymaniacs said Butch wasn't any better at Xs and Os than Mason was.

Well one poster sure enough claimed that. VM is full of golden material. When I'm having a bad day, I go there and read for a few minutes. It instantly makes me feel better, it's like herion for a junkie.

You'd think that would have been a prerequisite qualification BEFORE they hired him.

thanks for this.....

its funny bc they have the same players as last yr who were pitiful. Their defense looked good bc they were playing against those scrubs on offense who shouldnt even be at an SEC school. They have a couple LBs who are decent but that truly is it. They have zero depth along the DL and i mean zero. they have about 3-4 bodies. They have had the same OL for 3 yrs now and they have been the worst rushing team in the league statistically every yr. Their receivers are truly pathetic as we all saw once again in the spring game. Slow, cant catch and splitting time btw RB and WR bc they have no bodies.

Im telling you, WKU will spread them out and slice up their big, slow, front 7. VU offense is going to struggle against every team they face. It is that awful.

Butch hasn't exactly lit the world on fire with his "Xs and Os" to this point. As a matter of fact, I'd confidently say he's solidly below average. However, to say he's no better than inarguably the worst collegiate head coach I've personally ever witnessed in 40 yrs of following football is certifiably insane....of course we are talking about the blithering idiots on vandy mania so it actually follows....

Perfect example: Vandy's QB throws a screen (I think) that's intercepted. Mason blames the QB, claiming that the QB read the play call upside down.

Really? Give me the specific examples that leads you to believe that Butch out coaches his counterparts on Saturdays? Which games has he overcome talent deficits to pull out a victory? Florida games? Georgia games? Bama games? Missouri games? Vandy in 2013? Hell, Vandy last year? I'll concede the SCar games as outliers, although it took an all-time great performance out of Dobbs to eke out an OT win last year vs a very mediocre Gamecock team.

I'm a big CBJ fan. Just still waiting to see evidence that more than just his team's talent level decides who wins and who loses.

So you ask for examples and then cite two examples? How many games does he have to win against more talented teams before it is no longer an outlier? I actually agree that the jury is still out on he and the staffs play calling and game day execution.

Ok....2 out of 12.... He's killing it. I stand corrected. Btw, there's no way SCar was a more talented team than us last year, no way. I'll give you the 2013 SCar team.....make that 1 of 12.

Also, when we meet a team which much more talent we tend to get blown out under Butch....think Oregon, Bama, Oklahoma, OleMiss and Auburn to name a few.

Also.....

What's his winning percentage supposed to be against teams that have more talent? How many teams, more talented then Bama, has Saban beaten since he arrived on campus? Zero? Fire Saban bc he has lost to inferior talented teams which is proof he is a bad coach?

You do realize that virtually all college football matchups are won and lost based on talent level, right? Even the best coaches are only good enough to move the needle by about 1-2 wins per year based on talent matchups.

Saying Butch is a below average coach because he can't overcome talent deficits on a regular basis against SEC competition is unfair, because if he could do that on a regular basis, he would be the next Vince Lombardi. It's really rare. Hell, Saban regularly LOSES to teams with lesser talent and people still regard him as a football god.

You also have to look at games where Jones put the team in position to win and the players simply didn't execute. I would argue that UGA and VU in 2013 belong in that category, as does UF and Mizzou in 2014.

And if that's too lenient, then I'll concede that I think Butch is batting .500 on swing games. He has one win over greatly superior talent (USC 2013), one win over equal talent (USC 2014), one loss to equal talent (UF 2014, arguably equal talent), and one loss to slightly inferior talent (VU 2013).

I think that Butch is the type of coach who is going to win right at/slightly above where his talent level dictates. Luckily, he's an excellent recruiter, which means in a year or two he's going to have a talent advantage over 9-10 teams on the schedule and his coaching won't negate that advantage. That's important. He doesn't need to be an Xs and Os wizard to win in the SEC. He needs to be competent at calling plays, but it's more important to recruit excellent players and make them play hard on Saturdays. He's firing on all three cylinders right now.

This season will tell the tale. If we go 7-5 without major injuries, then I'll be right there with you. But I just don't see him being a below average coach. There's only one truly below average coach in the SEC right now and that's Derek Mason. There's a whole lot of average/slightly above average and a couple of guys above that.
