Last year is distant memory
Players and coaches talk about the 2015 season as if its under a new head coach. Thats not surprising. Mason and Ludwig are both new play-callers for the Commodores, the offseason strength and conditioning staff is new, and other assistants arrived in the offseason.
Defensive players are even watching game film from the 2013 Stanford team, which Mason coached, rather than replaying too much of their disappointing 3-9 season from a year ago.
Why punish themselves? Watching a football team with smarter, more athletic football players will teach Vandy.... what, exactly?
What is Mason saying in these film sessions? "Yeah... This is,uh, what it looks like when you have a, uh, competent head coach." Then he stares wistfully out the window as the memories of gridiron success fade slowly from his memory???
If they don't watch last year's film to remind themselves how awful they are, then 2015 is just going to feel like déjà vu.
One guy said earlier today that if they beat WKU they can set their goal at 7-5. I don't think they'd get to 7 wins this year if Austin Peay was on their schedule 7 times. Some fans are just more delusional than others I guess.
Johnny McCrary averaged one interception for every 19 attempts last season. Wade Freebeck was picked off once every 14.4 passes. Neither has been named the starter yet, but count on Ludwig choosing the one with the least interceptions in camp.
its funny how Vandy fans think Stanford is the same type of program as them. They dont have the personnel to do anything they want to do on offense or defense right now at VU. Also, Stanford had studs on that defense every yr mason was there and they were very deep. This vandy defense is super thin. They got a couple players on it but nothing after it. There were alot of 4 star, high 3 star and even a 5 star or two on that defense during Masons time there running that unit.
Negative
Doughty put up some impressive stats for sure. This season will tell, IMO. I just know that Towles threw for 369 yards against UF (#5 ranked D in adjusted rankings) and nearly 400 against MSU (#17 D in adjusted rankings).
He didn't do too hot towards the end of the season.
Doughty absolutely lit up some awful defenses (almost every team WKU played last season had a defense ranked 70th or worse, and he threw for a season low 134 yards against LA Tech's 30th ranked defense), but I will admit he has come a long, long way since they played us in 2013.
Regardless, I hope he throws for 600 and about 8 TDs against Vandy.
should be hilarious watching their slow ass front 7 chase around WKUs skill players.
Yep. WKU is seriously the perfect opponent for Vandy to open its season against. They have no name recognition, so some Vandy fans still believe they should win the game fairly easily. But WKU has a top 5 offense and brings back a 6th year senior QB who is a less well-known version of Case Keenum.
A loss to the Hilltoppers will torpedo their season right out of the gate and have Mason scrambling in vain to save his job.
Jared Dangerfield is an NFL receiver. He could come join us and be right in the mix. Hes a stud. Leon Allen, Brandon Doughty, Taywan Taylor, Antwane Grant, Tyler Higbee and a couple of their OL will have get a shot at the next level.
i think its hilarious how they have no idea what they are facing and the game is in 2 weeks. Theres also a chance their defense is at least a little improved. Vandy fans really banking on Ludwig and WKUs defense being awful. But they must have forgotten their own offense is just as trash.

our guys don't stand a chance. The level of intellectual brutality that will be unleashed upon UT in Neyland will collectively raise the IQ of the vile fans there for a solid 5 days after the game. I can only hope that dobbs can put up at least 40 points so we keep the score close. but then there defense is pretty much the '85 Bears and no doubt a couple of rousing speeches by the grand orator Mason will have them playing at their upmost level. and because of the extra time the spent on us last year I doubt they even need to prepare for the game against our paltry team.[shudder] Icepick is a stone cold killer, man.
