The loss of Wilcox ........

wilcox was never going to work here regardless of the amount of talent we had... whenever we needed a stop we could not get it and multiple teams had over 90 yard drives on us without throwing the ball one time and when teams did throw the ball we got roasted deep...we had the only bend don't break defense that bent and broke and that wasn't going to change any time soon

And that has changed how with SS?

The truth gets lost in perception sometimes, OP.

I watched it as well. Stanford is not some run of the mill, non-SEC quality program. If you think so you need to work on your football IQ. Many of the teams in the SEC could not beat USCw. Stanford did. They are as big or bigger than Bama. They do not have the playmakers Bama has, but they are physcially strong and very disciplined in what they do. They were favorably compared to having similar size as the NFL 49'ers, while running similar schemes.

Wilcox's D was innovative and fast. They blitzed and played tough man coverage. There were more 3 & outs by their D in the first half than we saw in a year with us. The reason is obvious. The players have sold out to his system and they have recruited the players to play the system. So not getting enough of the right players at UT for the system and all of the players not selling out may be why they did not do as well in the SEC. So who is responsible for making sure that happens?

Or you can continue to live in the world of perception. The head coach makes the final call on what system he wants to run and the type players he wants to recruit before he hires a DC most of the time. He communicates his plan to the AD and other parties before he is even hired. Dools did that as well.

JW's D doesn't work in the SEC

Wilcox D held Florida to way less yardage than SS did. And Sal has more talent this year. He held Fla to fewer points despite playing a short field 3 times due to turnovers and a blocked punt. We finished in the mid 30's in total D last year despite starting 3 true freshman and playing the toughest schedule in the country. What else do you want?

I agree that Stanford is a good team, but this same Washington team lost 41-3 to LSU three weeks ago. In the loss, they gave up 437 yds (242 on the ground). LSU went 7 of 12 on 3rd down during that game. Let's check back on Washington's defense after the next two games (Oregon and USCw).

We didn't fire JW, he bailed out on us. To h%^& with him and his schemes, he didn't want to be here. He can enjoy the AAA level football in the PAC 12. SEC is the major leagues.

OK, I am not going to say I miss Wilcox's bend don't break D- because like an earlier poster said, it will get you beat in the SEC. The thing I did notice last night was the positive attitude/leadership/mental toughness, Wash's D had the entire game. These guys made the most with what talent they had and truly believed they could stop Stan's run O and weren't worried or intimidated by a #8 ranking or coming off a win against USC. You could see them talking to each other on the field and on the sidelines, firing each other up, having that positive attitude that fostered a win. I don't know if Wilcox/Sermon had anything to do with it, but in my opinion that is one of the biggest things this ENTIRE team lacks-- we are a mentally soft team that can seem to deal/adjust to ups and downs during a game. (example- FL and ALL last year) I am assuming this has got to be a coaching issue, which makes you wonder what a coaching staff with that skill set could have been doing all along with the raw talent we have on this team. Thoughts???

Wilcox did amazing things with the hand he was dealt here. He will be a great HC sooner rather than later.

They played tough against LSU as LSU spanked that ass too. Nah, give me Sal. He is 3-4 players away from having a great Defense but we have to get speed in our secondary again.

Sorry, only one cup of Joe so far, I meant to say CAN'T SEEM TO DEAL/ADJUST TO UPS AND DOWNS DURING A GAME.

So you compare one game? Congratulations. You won

Would take Sal 100 times out of 100 opportunities over Wilcox.

Not saying I disliked CJW, just saying that I don't think his Defensive philosophy was suited for the SEC as well as CSS. Jmo.

Wilcox is NOT an SEC coach and he never will be. We need to just forget about his inconsistent lackluster game plans and defenses. Embrace the change cause Sal has at least three and if some of the turnover results and big plays aren't apparent then the observer is blind.

What we need to do is make sure we take advantage of each and every opportunity that we make for ourselves.

Watching the great gameplay JW had last night made me realize that his departure may have indeed been the most crushing blow to DD and his ability to get this turned around. Most of us think SS was a great hire but reality is a new defensive scheme was destined to take some time to implement. Let's hope SS can lesson the growing pains process but IMO JW would have given DD a much better shot at survival this season.

If we played in th Pac 10 then yeah it would be big loss. We got Sal and changed from a 4-3 to a 3-4. We will be ok on D. Kids have to learn the system. I for one am glad Wilcox is gone. You don't sit back on defense in this league and win. We just need time.

That defense would have gotten SMOKED if WR88 for Stanford could hold onto a pass. He dropped 2 game changing receptions that surely would have led to scores.

I am not a fan of Wilcox, but he had only 1 playmaker on the DL and that was Jackson. In this league DL is amust to compete..
