The Last of Us Series (HBO)

Too much gay huh?

Volnation is so predictable. This episode is being universally praised, and will be regarded as one of the best episodes of TV all year.

Sure, I'll bite on this attempt to paint with a broad brush.

1. No, my problem with the episode in itself is not "too much gay", if this had been a hetero relationship then about 30 minutes into it I would have had the same feeling of "Ok I get it. Now can we get back to the story?" If you want to tell a random side love story, that's fine, but over an hour is overkill. I'm here for Ellie and Joel, not a random couple with little effect on the main story.

2. That being said, I do have an annoyance with the fact that the harsh truth is this episode wouldn't have happened, at least not to this extent, if it had been a straight couple. They wouldn't have devoted an entire (extended) episode to a side story about a straight couple, so yes it frustrates me that when I get 9 episodes of a show I've been dying for, one was clearly made to lure in a target audience. We watched all that for Joel and Ellie to get a truck. It's not hard to tell what the goal was there.

3. Bill's story in the game was one of the most anticipated storylines to see come to life in a live series. When Offerman was announced in the role, the thought of him trading insults with Ellie was so exciting. This arc was also supposed to introduce our first bloater to us, in a really cool, highly tense scene. That was substituted for a "touching love story"

I think any frustration with how this went down is pretty well justified.

I tend to agree, and if you will read back on this thread you’ll see that I had pegged this episode as a filler just by the preview I saw. Some seriously good moments in the game were bypassed, and it definitely saddened me a bit as I was excited to see how they handled it. With that being said, it was still good tv compared to most shows, and I do understand that the series will take certain liberties.

How did it take away from anything? Its an adaptation of the story. I bet if it was a straight couple you wouldn't have the same complaint

Are you familiar with the storyline of bill in the game? We gave up the whole dynamic between bill and Ellie, the trading of smart ass comments and insults, the first encounter with a bloater and all the chaos that ensues, bill telling how he once had a partner but realized you can’t survive in this world trying to take care of others, so he “wised the f*** up” as bill put it in the game. We gave up major moments and altered bills mindset in order to focus on a gay love storyline that does nothing for the story. Bills dead now. The game hints at bill being gay, frank being his partner and I had zero issues with it or bill. I was pumped to see bill in live action because the character was awesome and funny in the game. This was a pointless pander that took away from the better story. But sure, play victim. Anyone who didn’t like the changes to the story must be homophobes huh? Poor guy

Didn't play the games. I thought this episode was incredible. I don't think people should expect the story to be exactly like the games either. It is a story based off a video game that is "adapted" for tv. It's not going to be a carbon copy, clearly that triggers fans of the game. This was easily the best episode of the series so far.

The comments from TLoU (game) subreddit are all positive. It's not surprising someone who calls gay people "the alphabet crowd" would not like this episode.

No one said it has to be a carbon copy. But this episode was pointless, and when compared to bills storyline in the game it actually takes away from the story. They devoted an hour to show bill and franks love story, then killed them both at the end. Won’t see them again the entire series, so added absolutely nothing. Missed all the interaction and dynamic between Ellie and bill, the chaos Joel and Ellie go through in bills town, and frankly changed who bill is. For what? To insert a pandering episode. And btw, my dislike for the episode has nothing to do with my views on gay people. Bill was alluded to being gay in the game, and I loved his character and was really excited to see him in live action. And spoiler alert, major gay storyline with a major character to come. And the gay one is my favorite character in any game. So to try to pass my dislike of the episode off as just not liking gays is just you talking out of your a**, which isn’t surprising. You’re the same guy who said anyone who didn’t believe jussie or bubba Wallace was a racist 😂
I think we all know how that turned out.

You're mad at it not being a carbon copy of the game. They still have several episodes that can introduce the bloaters, so you don't know what's "supposed to happen" in the show.

"Lure in an audience"? What audience? Your thinly veiled homophobia is showing.

Just because a character is killed doesn't mean their story is pointless. Have you watched any tv show, ever? Like what even is this point?

You saying alphabet crowd and calling this episode pandering are absolutely signs of homophobia. Pandering to who exactly? Guess what? Several queer people were already watching this show, and queer people don't watch stuff just because it has queer people in it.

You are absolutely talking of your ass

Dude my favorite character in the last of us is the gay/lesbian one. If I were homophobic, it wouldn’t be that way. You are just another one of those people with victim mentality. If someone Didn’t like the episode, it couldn’t be because they didn’t like it. They’re homophobes. You’re no different than the people who cry racism at every turn, etc.
And yes, the episode was 100% pandering to the gay/lesbian crowd.
Bill was gay in the game, frank was his partner. Everyone still loved him. If homophobia was a problem, why did everyone like him then and why was everyone excited for bill in live action?Because of his interactions with Ellie and all the things that happened in the story there. That was all removed in order to focus on the gay love story aspect for the whole hour, complete with them in bed. Why? And then they just killed them both off at the end before even meeting Ellie, and just like that Joel and Ellie are back on the road. It’s fine if you liked it, many did. I didn’t. This victim mentality, cry “homophobia” sh** is pathetic though.

The LBGT audience. I thought that was obvious enough that I didn't have to specifically point it out.

I thought it was a great episode for what it was but as someone who played the games I can see the criticism for those that played the game for how they cut out a chance at Ellie and Bill's interaction. As far as the pandering comments, I could give a damn about whether it was or not. I've watched decades of sappy love between straight people, so if they choose to do one with non-straight characters I think we'll all be ok. But I agree they could have cut it down to maybe half the episode, not the full one. By itself, yes it was pretty incredibly acted and both actors deserve praise, but in context of the episode it reminded me of The Walking Dead episode where it was a flashback episode where Morgan met the guy who taught him how to fight. That was of itself a great episode but felt like filler after the fact.

I'm still trying to figure out how a homosexual Romeo and Juliet (sans family) is being praised so much. It's literally nothing that hasn't been done before.

Forgive me if I didn't enjoy watching people kiss and cook and garden for an hour, get old and sick, then die together. That's not really my type of TV. It was like they needed filler and stuck "The Notebook" into the middle of our post-apocalyptic adventure.

Agreed. Which is maddening, because the original story involving bill was exciting, intense, had great dialogue, and it was all given up for that.

How is it pandering if it was literally in the source material?

How is it pandering if it was literally in the source material?

I’ve already explained it like 4 times in here. The source material alludes to bill and frank being together. However it focused on Ellie and Joel trying to survive bills town/traps, their encounter with a bigger different type of infected, and great dialogue and back and forth between Ellie and bill. The series discards all of that and more, in order to focus on the gay love storyline. Even had to show them in bed. Then just killed them both off before even meeting Ellie. 100% sacriced the better story in order to focus on bill and frank being lovers and make the gay side happy. Could have showed the relationship in the first 25 minutes and then moved on to the actual story, instead we lost critical moments from the story for an hour of filler.

They changed up the story a bit to make for better television. It probably won't be the last time. If they left certain dialog/interactions out they obviously felt they weren't "critical moments" to the story. It has nothing to do with pandering or trying to "lure in" an audience or satisfy one side. If they weren't already gay in the source material you may have a point, but they were.

Do you know how boring this show would be if it were just Ellie and Joel?

You don't even want this episode in the first place but you're still mad that you don't get the version pandering to you? What are you even talking about? You think straight relationships are under-represented in TV? GTFO, LOL.

It wasn't filler and it wasn't for you. It was great TV.

Not that I'm a big fan of romance, but that was a really sweet episode and it was also cool. I loved seeing how they built a good/safe life. These shows aren't good because they put knives in zombies' heads. They're good because of how we identify with the characters and their suffering/management of the apocalypse. I can't remember a happy storyline occurring within any zombie apocalypse show/movie. There it is. They did something different and it hit the mark. This was a Vince Gilligan kind of episode.

I didn't want this episode in the first place? How did you arrive at that conclusion? And where do you get that I wanted it to pander to me?

Genuinely interested in your response to these questions because I'm perplexed now.
