The Kim Caldwell System

Im saying D1 SEC is a different level of player from all aspects and you can’t out athlete other teams with a tiny team in stature like you can in D2. If a decent HS player wants to play D2 sports, he/she can make it happen. Some of the schools are smaller than high schools.

THIS! We forget that teams like UConn, South Carolina, LSU, et al are going to have deep teams with a lot of athletic talent and basketball savy players and coaches who will adjust to (1) take advantage of the easy layups and (2) insert counter attacks to the system.

If CKC is going to continue with the 5-player subbing technique - she needs at least 10 players that are of the same caliber as the 5 to 7 top players on the top teams. Otherwise, this will be a system where she can beat teams with lesser talent but will lose to the top teams badly year after year, game after game.

I just think she is very stubborn and the light bulb has not gone off in terms of her realizing this will not be effective against the top teams in D1. I do however believe she got a false sense of "it could work" by beating UConn last year, but Geno schooled her this year - as did South Carolina and UCLA. She is still stuck on - I just need the right players and I need them to play like this.

i am not sure Coach has gotten the right recruits to fit her system.... or if so..... the buy in has fallen short on optic observation..... hope it is successful if she goes the full distance with it

If she doesn't adjust, she will not be here very long - unless the fans are willing to concede we will not be competitive against the top teams in the SEC or the country anymore.

As I recall, Richardson didn't insert groups of five new players. However, he did far more rotating than most other coaches of the era.

He threw a large number of tremendous athletes at them. And he basically wore teams down. Had a few future NBA guys in his mix....lot of athletes, long, lean, quick twitch, defensive hounds.

Facts .

Here is what the 40 minutes of hell looked like in the national title game against Duke in 1994.

Kim needs to take the Rick Barnes approach and start avoiding star gazing. She needs players with work ethic and drive and determination above polished and proven skill and talent.

There are plenty of Zakai Ziegler, Grant William, Jordan Bone, Mashack, and other players out there who want to be molded and built with pride.

These top star recruits aren’t necessarily built for her grind.

I have NO problem with the accountability, transparency, and responsibility Kim Caldwell demands of her team.

I think she needs player leaders who demand it of their teammates. And she’s missing that this year.

We have a potential STAR/GENERATIONAL TALENT coming in Oliviyah Edwards. When we won the last 2 national championships in 2007/2008, it was superstar Candace Parker and everyone else in supporting and glue level roles. On this team this season, we got too too many Beyonces and not enough players willing to be Kellys and Michelles.

You need that couple of top players then the rest need to be blue collar grinders certainly has been a winning strategy for him.

We haven't had a player like Parker since Parker and that even includes Rickea Jackson. Parker could do it all play all five positions. She had some really good grinders playing with her Anosike and Hornbuckle. Every player knew their role and they filled it to perfection.

For sure. And also when we had the big 3 in The Meeks for 2 seasons still the other 7-8 players knew their roles. The Superstar was Holdsclaw and Tamika/Semeka were our stars, but the egos for everyone else were knew if the team wanted to win national titles and make deep runs their own potential accolades and achievements might be redirected or rethought.

I'm not sure the constant subbing creates leaders among the players. The leaders are normally on the court during the game providing consistency. I think this is part of the problem.

Generational talent should be on the court MOST of the game, not being subbed out every few minutes.

I believe when the team was winning, the players did not let the subbing bother them, but when the really bad losses started and the system is no longer creating victories, attitudes have changed.

Bruce Pearls teams were better when he had players with chips on their shoulders. 5 star players don’t want to play as hard as someone like lofton who wasn’t recruited by p4 schools. I would imagine it’s the same with CKC system. She needs some hardworking blue collar types, that appreciate the chance to play for a p4 team.

Hard to see how a system that is predicated on creating a meaningful difference in number of possessions could work against high level competition.

I’ve thought this years team picked up too many chiefs and not enough indians. I look at last year’s team. Kim’s first season and look how well this team played. They learned and executed her system in less than a full season.

It was a fine balancing act. Spearman was 5th option on the team which helped a great deal once the later segment of the schedule hit and postseason. This season she has been expected to be that player to be rely on and lean on and she takes too many games off for us to be a 1-3 option. Not to mention the buy in all around and chemistry felt renewed with last season's team. That team wanted to work, play hard, had a lot to prove, the leadership was present. 24-10 just doesn't happen out of the sky for a 1st year head coach who never coached Power 4. The roster was just better.

Yes!

Next year, she needs more mortar gurls with fewer bricklayers

I'll tell you this, if Caldwell drops the ball with a generational talent like Oliviyah she won't have to worry about getting another Top 10 recruit. Holdsclaw coached her in the Overtime league and Parker is one of her bosses at Adidas. A lot is riding on Kim Caldwell to NOT screw this up with her outlandish, egotistical subbing.
