Recruiting at TN isn't like at a blue blood that gets to pick and chose from the 50 highest ranked players. Duke, KY, UNC, etc battle over the top 25 and fill their classes with leftovers in the 25-75 range. Barnes on the other hand isn't simply taking the best of the rest. He has to put more weight on how well they fit and how coachable and drama free they'll be. Plus when TN signs a potential lottery pick, they don't necessarily have another 5-star a year later to add to the roster like the blue bloods do.

There's been a lot of criticism of striking out in the last 2 cycles. But as large as the previous class was, it's not as easy to get top recruits that are facing competition for playing time against so many upperclassmen. Balancing classes has been difficult.
