Isn't an impeachment trial a criminal affair? After all they are attempting to ascertain high crimes and misdemeanors. I would think Mr Trump could tell them to go **** themselves.

No. It's technically not criminal in any way, shape or form. Trump - if found guilty - would not face any potential legal ramifications OTHER THAN being removed from office.
