Hell of a story, thanks for sharing. Was living in Milwaukee at the time and drove down to South Bend for the game w a buddy of mine. Tix were $250+ if, IF you could find one. Just minutes before kickoff, we were standing in front of the gates for the stadium and there was NOBODY anywhere - all were inside. Just then, a well dressed older couple came down from a cloud and they noticed my Orange & White Wingtips and said "Are you by chance a Tennessee fan?". They sold us two of their unused tickets for $50 EACH and in we went. Our seats were friggin' amazing, as we sat in the northeast corner of the end zone smack dab in the middle of the UT section. I had two UT seat cushions that I pounded together the whole game and when we started our miraculous comeback, the UT section was ROCKIN'. When the field goal went wide right (off Jeremy Lincolns buttocks), it was as pure of a joy and jubilation I have ever experienced. We went down on the field and were grabbing chalky grass and weeds as souvenirs and just jumping around like idiots.
I was also at the Arkansas game in that horrible weather in Ktown and drove from Boston to the Syracuse game - which started off our undefeated National Championship year. (that should be on the list) Those two games are such an integral part of our NC season and each in their own right Top 5 games IMO however, beating Lou Holtz on his field in front of Touchdown Jesus along with the many devoted and loyal Vol fans that traveled to South Bend really was magic.
1992 gators at Neyland
Was thinking this one. Was when it was torrential rain at Neyland and we were up like 42 to 7going into the 4th quarter? We absolutely destroyed them....the ball would float away after being spotted if the center didnt hold it still. Hardest rain i have ever seen at UT and we still had astroturf . Heath Shuler was unstoppable
This may be the last time we truly beat the fool out of those gators til they looked like a Div3 school....
Honorable mention would be 2001 at gators when Travis Stephens ran for 240ish yards. He ran thru those 90s sized holes in the Oline (you could roll a Caddy thru them and not get fingerprints on the hood) but the kid was unstoppable in the 2nd level. He was in a class by himself that game...it didn't matter how much they stacked the box, he ran over, under, around, and through the entire defense. All. Day. Long.
Go Vols.
So Arkansas in 98 isn’t one of your favorite comebacks? We were down 18 to an undefeated top 10 team. There's really two ways to look at this: greatest comeback games and greatest beat-down games.
My favorite comebacks are Miracle at South Bend, 2016 vs. UGA (I still get goose bumps), and 2016 Florida.
My favorite beat-down games are Sugar Bowl vs. Miami and 1995 Alabama.
More recently, I really enjoyed 2019 vs. S. Carolina, because of the pounding we gave the Cocks in the second half
That was the largest but Arkansas in 98 was the greatest as that was everything on the line. ND was a 24-point comeback on the road against a 1-loss top 10 team. Arkansas was at home and was “only” 18 points but both teams were top 10 and undefeated, we had just gone to number 1, it took a crazy play, and we were trying to hang onto our national championship aspirations so, to me, Arkansas was the greatest comeback even though it wasn’t the largest. Both are all time classics for all of college football though, not just UT football.Miracle at South Bend is the greatest comeback in UT football history.
I found an article on a website that had these 10 games listed as The Greatest Rewatchable Tennessee Football Games Of All Time. I know that obviously there are a ton more that could be on this list, but they closed it to 10 choices. Now you vote on your choice, let's decide which one on this list is the most rewatchable.
10. 2006: Tennessee 31 Air Force 30
9. 2001: Tennessee 38 Kentucky 35
8. 2016: Tennessee 38 Florida 28
7. 2014: Tennessee 45 South Carolina 42 (OT)
6. 2006: Tennessee 51 Georgia 33
5. 2007: Tennessee 52 Kentucky 50 (4OT)
4. 1991: Tennessee 35 Notre Dame 34
3. 2004: Tennessee 30 Florida 28
2. 2001: Tennessee 34 Florida 32
1. 1998: Tennessee 28 Arkansas 24
Not sure how they left off the Sugar Bowl vs Miami
Geeeze...Florida 98 not on there??
Who.picked these games?
I mentioned 2005 rally in death valley and voted 06 vols vs uga we r on same pageThere’sa game that doesn’t get talked about much because the season fell apart but the 2nd half of the 2005 opener @ LSU is one of the best 30 minutes of football you will find.
Another fun one was 2006 @UGA when we got down 17 but then hung 50 on them and boat raced them in the 2nd half.

I was also at the 98 Arky game. 15 years old at the time. I convinced my dad to stick around even though we were down by a sizable margin. That definitely turned out to be a great decision. Thanks and one follow up: I attended the Arkansas game in 1998 and sat somewhere up in the UU section. It poured buckets during that game but, I still pounded my UT seat cushions throughout the game. And yes, the pop is loud and obnoxious but hey, I am a Volunteer fan. I recanted this story on Vol Nation about 10 years ago and someone replied that they sat a few rows behind me and wanted to shoot me! LOL. We won and that was really all that mattered! Go Vols!
