This sounds like exactly the type of game I would love. I will check it out.

I typically try not to get games in early access so I will wait till august. But I will definitely check out some gameplay.

The Scourge of War and Take Command games ate a ton of my time. Well get them again if I get a PC

Looked this up after you posted it. I will definitely be getting this next week. Waiting for the summer sale to start and I’ll grab this along with a few other games.

My one complaint from what I have seen in videos so far is that the battles dont feel very big at all. Very few moving pieces, with battles that should stretch for miles maybe taking up a quarter of the space it should.

Maybe it was just the guy playing but it seemed like brigade or larger level combat. I am thinking there needs to be regiment level control to avoid the battles getting blase'.

I’ve fought a few pretty large scale engagements. Where you see them really stretch out is when reinforcements begin to arrive. And now with the AI upgrades, there seems to be a lot more movement in battle by the enemy.

I don't know if it's what I'm looking for as far as tactical command. May give it a shot of course.

Grand Strategy is too big a time sink for me these days, not that I don't enjoy it

Ultimate General Civil War is a fantastic tactical game if you want. AI is challenging, without straight cheating. Some customization available.

Might have to pick this up. Huge fan of the original.

It hasnt aged well, even the remaster.

The new UI blows, you can change it back to the original. But by the time you get things set the way you want you are pretty much just playing the originals anyway. Slightly better graphics, but no where close to a modern TW.

The nice thing is though it includes the actual original, and Alexander too. I still havent played Alexander even though I now own it.

Dang. That's disappointing. Maybe I will pass on it.

This looks like one I will definitely pick up. I like the UI much better than the Grand Tactician one.

It is real smooth, very intuitive.

A word of warning the first mission for either rebels or yanks is really rough, but after that levels out to be manageable.

Like after watching a couple how to videos and doing the missions multiple times I still have no idea how you are "supposed" to win them.

I have a separate save file after each that I "save as" from to start a new campaign.

So dont be thrown off by the first mission.

Well I picked up Grand Tactician last week even though it didn’t go on sale. FWIW here are my thoughts after a few days with it.
PROS: super in depth. There is so much to the game, many moving parts and they all seem to work together. They’ve taken so much into account, just one example. A brigade seeing their first combat is likely to break much quicker than a veteran brigade. Devs seem very active within the community. I think this game has the most potential of any civil war game so far.
CONS: lack of a tutorial or even explanation. The only on game tutorial is just the video from HistoryGuyGaming, which is a great video but one of them wouldn’t even work in game for me. Took a couple days to learn how to move units around the way I wanted. Controls are a little finicky even after adjusting them. Little confusing how different things factor into a battle. I had a large battle and inflicted 33 percent casualties on the enemy to their 15 percent on me. Still ended in a minor defeat for me. Not sure how much objective points and other things tie into that during battle, I know they do but not how much. Lastly, it’s definitely still EA expect some bugs and issues. Got 4 days into a pretty big battle only for the game to crash and lost all the progress.

Are orders given by Corps/Division/Brigade?
So, I’m still new to the game, but from what I’ve seen the order always comes from the next higher up. So if you want a single brigade to move that order will have to travel to them from where the division commander is, with the exception of some smaller orders like rotating line to defend your flank. I also think in the policy section you have to unlock corps before you can use them, but that was on one of the YouTube videos so it’s possible to that isn’t the case if it was been updated.

Hmmm... Which one should I pick up later this week? I'm leaning toward Ultimate General, as I like the UI much better. Anyone have any comparisons between the two?
