The Golf Thread

It makes me almost not want to play, and ruins my scores obviously.

The only thing that saves me is if it's an open course. A lot of courses out here are very narrow, so I end up shooting mid to high 8Os cuz my driver is so bad.

It frustrated me to no end.

Its hard to finish a 4 or 5 when to your tee shot is OB and PL.

When I first started playing I was extremely consistent for a weekend golfer out of the box. I would blow up my iron play and putt decent.

Since then, my iron play has improved, my driving is terrible, and my putting has remained the same.

Getting out of the tee box in play with decent distance does a lot for your confidence, even tho your done with the driver for that hole. (At least in most cases):)

Just suggestions, though you may have tried all of them.
-focus on the head down and behind the ball-maybe getting anxious on the tee and swaying or looking up quick
-shorter swing makes it easier to stay on plane--I used to have a long swing (i didn't realize until video) and I blocked a lot of shots because I couldn't catch up as I rotated
-change driver and/or shaft--sometimes a fresh start is needed if you are worried about where your tee ball is going
-breathe--a friend of mine was holding his breath on every shot and didn't realize it. Had to make him too tense
-think about something else on the tee to relax--for me, the more I think about my swing, the worse I hit.
-drink two beers quickly before playing.:)

I am having huge issues getting off of the tee, and it's essentially a huge mental/confidence issue. I'll stripe my driver in the range and then either snap hook or block my driver about a mile to the right.

Do you have a pre-shot routine? One you also use on the driving range? If not, you need one... it's the best thing from taking your "range" game to the course.

Nah, I play too fast so that's a huge problem. I know it's all in my head.

Days when I hit the driver well, I'll be hovering around par. But other day's I'll just blow up.

I think I just have way too many thoughts in my head with the driver.

i used to have huge issues with my driving game, but stopped trying to destroy the ball off every tee shot last summer and it has helped me improve alot. i'd rathar sacrifice the extra distance rathar than risk toeing it off the club or topping it because of an overpowered swing.

Then I'm sure my 20 suggestions really helped. Ha. Just don't think. Keep your head down and swing without worrying about where it goes. I think thats a reason I have been playing better. I used to try to go low and only could once in awhile. Now, I don't care as much. I'm relaxed and playing well. My only thought now is keeping my head steady and behind the ball.
Good luck. Hope you conquer it soon.

You don't have to hit driver off the tee. I have a hybrid I love & can hit my 3 iron pretty good too. If it's an average par 4 I can get to around the 150 or better with either & that's all you need.

Yeah, I just want to fix it though. Too stubborn to stop hitting it.

If you have a video camera film your swing. If you have a smart phone you can get a swing reader app & add the lines & stuff which is cool. Anyway the camera don't lie & 99% of the time what you think you're doing right you're doing wrong. Also start with the basics. Always start with your grip then ball position. If you're missing both ways chances are both need tweaking.

If you hit it well on the range, you don't need to change your swing, so don't listen to these swing tips people are throwing at you. When you said you think too much, that's probably exactly it. That's why I like a pre-shot routine. Your mind is on the routine instead of specific swing thoughts. But you have to practice it a lot. Soon it will become second nature.

My goal this weekend is to hit the range today and hopefully not be so tired that I can't squeeze in 9 tomorrow after finished my honey-do list around the house before my mom gets here on Saturday.

Yeah I actually have a good swing, I took one lesson because of my driver and smoked it and the guy was like well there is nothing really to change.

Ball position and full shoulder turn were the only major issues. I do have a Jay Haas like hitch at the top of my swing, but I have always had it and don't even realize I do it.

For people in the Atlanta area, I got an email from the GSGA saying that they are selling tickets to the Tour Championship 2 for 1 thru Sunday. I think the pairs cost $20 for the practice round, $40 for Thurs/Fri and $55 on the weekend. Factor in free parking and this may be the best deal to see elite level golf that I've ever seen.

47-37 yesterday at Westhaven. Why do we golfers do that to ourselves?
I had a round last week where I had a 6 shot differential between front and back and that's about as big a difference as I can remember having. 10 shots is crazy; especially when the low number is on the back 9.
