The Golf Thread

the reason i asked is because i'm pretty sure that the girlfriend is going to 'surprise' me with new irons for christmas. i bought a taylor made hybrid the other day, so the only new clubs i lack are irons. dicks had some on sale for 400, but i dont know anyone that uses them either.

i plan on shooting par after i start playing with cavity backs. take your all's money.

Nike irons are first class clubs. Everyone has their own favorite, and Nike 1) did steal all of their engineering talent away from other makers, and 2) does third party manufacture them (most labels do,) but that doesn't change the fact that they now make clubs that are as good as anyone's.

Hit 'em straight and enjoy.

Today is awesome in Memphis. 79 and sunny. Will be leaving the office in short order to play Stonebridge in Lakeland.

played yesterday at Pine Oaks. Muni course was in typical craptastic condition for late fall and winter. Greens were hard as a rock. Nothing less than a 52 would hold on those greens. However, if you tried to roll it up from the fairway, be prepared for it to stick.

Hit the ball incredibly well though, especially solid in my irons. I don't think I hit a single bad iron. Just got craptastic results.

some days the results almost don't matter. It's fun as hell to know it's doing what you want and going where you want.

I agree totally. I never expect much from this course. I mean walk all you want for 11 bucks? How much can I expect?

But the confidence i had with irons in my hands was amazing and something I know I can take to the better courses in the area as time and weather allows. I was hitting cuts and fades and even pulled off a draw (something I seriously struggle with).

I love those days. Much more fun than an OK striking day with great putting.

I love making putts, but the confidence of hitting it where you look with the movement you imagined cannot be beaten.

I now wish I had started following along with this thread way back when it was started, since I started golfing myself earlier this year.

I'd never touched a club before in my life, and the first few times out were especially brutal, but I think as the year has gone along I've improved to the point of just being terrible.

Everyone in this thread has been exactly there, shanks and all.

Did you do some lessons, or just give it a whirl with some golf magazine and buddy advice?

Guy I used to work with talked me into trying it. He let me borrow a set of his clubs, gave some advice, and then I went off and did nothing but the driving range for about a month.

hey doozer

you might get somebody who understands golf and golf learning, not necessarily a pro, to give your swing a look and help get you on the right path from the early stages.

My first 5 weeks at the driving range each started with a 2 hour lesson from a very solid pro. It was unbelievably helpful looking back at it.

My handicap dropped very quickly because he forced me to work on things that helped me get it in the hole quicker. Focused a lot on short game and didn't hit a driver until the last lesson. It was an interesting way to approach it, but I bet I hit more 8 iron chips with my weight almost exclusively on my left than any other shot.

I still love the 8 iron punch shots and knock downs.

Lessons definitely wouldn't be a bad idea, but I'm not sure if I'm quite that invested in it just yet.

More than anything, my driver has improved the most. At the start, when I actually started making consistent contact, I was slicing everything. Finally got that figured out in the last month or so and my driver is now straight, for the most part.

Not sure where you are, but get a package of lessons at a driving range, golf shop, golf course, etc. Money well spent to get the basics set right. You don't want bad habits engrained in your swing. Trust me - old golf habits are hard to break.

you start hitting the driver straight, you're freaking invested bro.

i become invested (or re-invested) when i start getting up and down with 30 footers or chipping in from the fringe. much more gratifying than bombing one 250 or 300 right down the middle.

i have to admit though, it is pretty nice being able to go driver > 9, PW, or, SW instead of driver > 3, 4, or 5 because i'm only 150 yards and way right from the tee box.
