The Golf Thread

anyone know a good place in knoxville to have new grips put on my irons?

Dale's Winning Edge is supposedly in the top ten off course pro shops in the country. Extremely nice golf store, never had any work done there though. Can't imagine with their prestige that they'd screw it up.

they're easy to do yourself as long as you're not getting grips that help to align your hands correctly. Dale's is a good store, but i think it's overpriced.

unless they're doing their tent sale. they have unbelievable deals.

how much are they charging?

i'm probably going to get it done this winter and i imagine i'll be too lazy to do it myself. :)

same as dale's.

the grips i'm going for are 5.49, and the labor charge is $2 per club. i've never done anything like that myself, so i'm not gonna take the chance on trying it.

it's not that hard, but I fortunately know a handful of pros who are really good at it and they don't charge me labor. Had the Golf Pride Multi Compound Cords put on my irons this spring (started with full cords, but they blistered the crap out of me). These Golf Prides are sweet and I would recommend them to anyone.

i have a golf pride soft-tie on my driver. i like it, but for the irons i wanted something a little different.

anything will be better than what i have on there now. the original grips, and they're about 15 years old. they're getting so bad that i've been looking my best for a right handed nike golf glove...but then i decided to take the leap.

yeah, if you average at least once a week or so, grips should be changed yearly for maximum performance. You will probably notice a significant difference.

footjoy makes better gloves, imho, than nike. and i had both gloves this summer.

and imho, somehow acushnet makes the Titleist glove way better than the footjoy.

I will agree footjoy gloves are better than the nike ones though.

i will consider that next time i'm looking for a glove. right now i just have two of the same footjoy.

i usually have two at any point in time but have been known to have 3-4 in the summer because i have serious hand sweat. i try to get one i'm comfortable with and one to try out.

after i take my irons over there tomorrow, i'm gonna go check out dale's. my friend said they had a lot of cool stuff there.

also, check out 3balls.com, lots of sales right now.

yeah, we've discussed the hand sweat thing and I'm in the same boat during late June, July and August. I typically always have to switch at the turn. I've never understood why the Titleist glove feels so much better and lasts longer than the Footjoy for me. It seems since they push their Footjoy product so much, Acushnet would make it the best glove.

like i said, keep an ear out for the Dale's tent sale. they're twice a year and he throws out a bunch of solid equipment (new and demo clubs) as well as good prices on shoes, balls, hats, etc.

yeah, i remember that now.

i tried a wristband (with an adidas logo) this summer and found it helped out a lot. i also tried a little baby powder and that sucked. i had to wash my hand almost immediately before i could swing.

also, unfortunately, it's hard not to wear anything that's plastered with a logo these days. i hate that.

Sorry, I just don't agree with that. Grips should be changed when they feel or appear worn, not before. Of course, I also don't change my oil every 3k miles, so I guess I'm just sort of a rebel:cool2:

if you play once a week or so and your grips don't feel or appear worn after a year of play, I'd be shocked.

I change mine once a year and that's plenty. A soap and water washing does wonders for them too. I just use vanilla ols tour wraps and still love 'em.

Bill I think the Titleist v Footjoy glove thing is probably the model. The Titleist Players glove and FJ Perma soft are same thing with small difference in thickness.

I play a couple of times a week during nice weather, so along with some time on the range, I have no idea what that averages. I'd guess the grips last about 2, maybe a little more. I use golf pride wraps, which don't seem to wear as quickly as the cords.

My iron set will be 3 in December, and the handles are still in good shape.

EDIT: almost forgot that I missed most of last year with an elbow problem, but they are still going to give me more than 2 years of play.

soap and water definitely helps grips for sure.

Are you implying the Titleist Players glove is slightly thicker than the PermaSoft? If that's the case, I would consider that a big difference. In the summer I have a problem of sweat just drying them out until they are too difficult to use, but between September and May my glove tends to stretch and rip along the pinkie side of my bottom palm. Titleist gloves seem to last twice as long as Footjoy.

Sergio and AK just went off together in the final group at the Tour Championship, for those who may not be interested in football until 330.
