The Golf Thread

I actually would like to know your stance on it. I've got no issues with it in this case, and I'm usually the purest of purists.
I really do feel for his plight but I just think that, despite what a lot of people who have never played competitively think, walking the course is a fundamental pArt of the sport.

Also, where do you draw the line? There are a lot of guys with foot and back problems that have to limit their play because they can't walk the course among other things.

How many of those injuries are birth defects?

what if the pga was cart only. Say a player gets motion sick or has cartaphobia. Would they allow that player to break the rules and walk?

I know that's a huge stretch and probably a bad example, but I thought I'd take a stab.

Anybody here get blisters on their fingers? I get one on my left hand's (non glove hand) ring finger and somehow one on my right hand's (glove hand) middle finger. I use the interlocking grip and since both fingers getting blisters are the ones directly next to the interlocked fingers, I think the blame lies somewhere with the interlock. I know someone, or likely multiple people, are going to preach how proper grip and pressure won't cause blisters, but whatever. I'm striking the ball better now than ever before and if it's not broke, I say don't fix it. I always have a pack of medicine tape to remedy the situation and I've even noticed PGA tour pros, including Tiger with medicine tape on their finger so I'm guessing at least some of them have the same problem. Just wondered if anyone here had the problem.

I have to be one of the most inconsistent golfers ever. I'll shoot an 87 one day, then 3 days later shoot 113 on the same course. I'll be playing well then all the sudden I'll get what my friend calls "the shanks" and it's like I'm a beginner again and I can't fix it. It's embarrassing. I'm loving my new Mizuno MX25 irons when I'm not shanking it.

The high 80's is a really good round for me.

I play that way (my high game is usually around low 90's, maybe 95, though) since I started back playing after taking 15 years off. I played all sports all the time as a younger person but age is becoming a big part of my problem. One day I will feel "athletic" and co-ordinated and everything is pretty easy...another day I feel like a guy who never played any sport in his life. I can play 10 over or 25 over playing about two days a week, maybe three. With equipment being so much better these days I can usually stay in the 80s if I can putt at all. I hit Ping i-3 OS irons.
You also sound a bit like my favorite playing partner, who hits everything straight as a plumb bob w/ good distance then suddenly can't hit out of his shadow for several holes. Some of his problem stems from a tendency to get into the habit of striking the ball in the same place in his stance and not letting his clubs do the work for him (and overswinging plus strangling his grips). I think it's a mental fatigue thing. The worst kind of repetition.
Maybe we play this way in order to really appreciate the low 80s scores on occasion...? :hi:

I only use a glove the first three or so times I play after winter. Usually two, since my hands somehow turn into sissies when I'm not playing...then it seems my hands are tough enough to play without any glove... which is the way I like to play. Have you experimented with grip size? I knew a club pro who had trouble with blisters and went to bigger wrapped grips and the problem went away.

yeah, if I go bigger than standard size I can't hold onto the club. I've got a good sized palm, but short fingers. Wear a Medium Large Cadet glove.

Hello golf players of VN, I'm someone who loves to play golf when I get the opportunity but I'm really bad at it. Although I've only played a couple of times over the years, I've always enjoyed it. I don't own a set of clubs but I've always wanted to buy some and start to seriously play. I have some friends from church who play almost every weekend and was thinking about getting my own set to join them.

My question is, what would be a good set of clubs for a beginner? The guy at my church recommended that I buy Walter Hagen XLR's. They are currently on sale for $199 on Dick's Sporting Goods website with free shipping. I'm not trying to spend a whole lot of money since I have no real experience with playing. Is this brand a good one to purchase for beginners or should I look elsewhere? TIA.

Callaway big Bertha irons. Most forgiving iron you can get. Can probably find a used set cheap. Find a club you can hit solid off the tee & get the ball in play. Doesn't have to be a driver a good 3 wood or hybrid that you can hit 200ish would work just fine.
