The Golf Thread

Oh yeah, I joined the player development program. I already got my money's worth, 2 large buckets of balls=$14, a twilight round=$30. I'm going to start walking the course to avoid the cart fee so the $35 a month is a great deal.

I could see maybe 1-2*, but much more than that scares me.

Well, 3-4 degrees and you're starting to look into a swing adjustment anyway. 1-2 is typical, but 3-4 is not impossible. A lot of older Pings and Clevelands cannot be bent at all.

You adjust your lie so that you can strike the ground on the center of the sole. Not only will you have digging issues if you're striking the ground with the toe or heel of the club, which will cause exaggerated twisting of the clubhead, but since the face of the club has loft and that loft is perfectly upright (read: straight) when the club is soled correctly (in the center), when your club face is angled up or down depending on whether you are hitting toe or heel, the loft on the club will adjust likewise and prevent you from hitting with a square club face. (whew!)

What are the advantages of doing it?

It's not really an "advantage". It's what has to be done to make clubs fit you correctly. The sole of the club needs to be level at impact. If the heel is hitting first, you need to get the lie angle flattened. If the toe is hitting first, you need them bent more upright.

Any pro should be able to put tape on one of your clubs and have you hit an impact board a couple of times and immediately know if you need your lie angles adjusted.

Yeah I definitely need to get it done

So, the suggestion is to adjust your clubs and then your swing accordingly?

Have found a few pros for some swing lessons but can't find anywhere that will do clubs. May have to head to KC or STL...

Can't wait for the weekend, off work, nothing to do but sit there and watch Tiger win the first major of the year.

Once I get fully recovered, I can't wait to break out the sticks and play my first round of the year. I've had the itch to play for a while now.

..

Nope . . . . That's backwards. Best thing you can do is take a lesson or two with your current clubs and then let the pro recommend equipment once you're swinging halfway decent.

Can't stand that place. Mainly the front 9. Some really stupid layouts. What do they charge now?

It was 30, which isn't too bad, and I don't mind the course. I was three over through 7 and doubled 8. Finished with a 41 on the front and a 48 on the back. I don't know what happened at the turn but it wasn't good.

Typical for me, can't put 18 holes together, shot a 38 on the front this morning, 44 on the back, so frustrating

Tell me about it, oh well I broke 90 and its still early in the season. Hopefully I get it down a few strokes in the next couple of months.

Two things I'd like to ask.

Last summer, I bought a set of Wilson Staff Ci9's. I'm positive I made the right choice, but I'd like to get a couple of things changed on them. Number one, the grips. I've got pretty big hands, I'd like to switch out the stock grips for some midsize ones. I've been researching online and It seems it's pretty easy to do it yourself. What kind of grips should I be looking at that will work best in this east Tennessee climate? Any tips/recommendations on the grips, doing it yourself, etc. is welcome.

Second topic, I'm 6'4". I saw this was discussed a couple pages ago and sorry if someone already answered my question, but I'd like to get the lie adjusted on my clubs. I'm pushing all of my irons about 5-10 yards right. I strike it great but it's just hanging out there, so I have to compensate with a decent draw. I know this means that I need the lie adjusted 1-2 degrees upright. So the question I have is, where should I go to get it done? I know Dicks', Edwin Watts, etc., offer club adjustments, but has anyone had good experiences anywhere? Anywhere you would recommend me taking my clubs to?

Thanks a lot guys.
