The Golf Thread

How's that one play from 50 yards in. That's really the only place where I think there's an appreciable difference in the "premium" balls. You can get some of them to grab better than others on the partial wedges and pitches.

The best. It isn't quite as long as some of the others for me, but it is solid around the greens, including putter.

only Goydos would shoot 59 and only lead by a stroke. pretty much the story of his life.

The guy is just snakebit, both in golf and in real life. I like him. Candid, smart, funny. He may never win a major, or another tournament, but he's cashed millions of dollars in checks with that "caddy swing" of his. A prime example of how far good course management and a good putting stroke can take you.

Good ball. These days, everyone's premium ball is extremely good. Differences are minimal.

In your honest opinion (and I do trust your judgment on these things), for those of us who don't muster 100+ mph of clubhead speed, do you think there's really any advantage to playing a Pro V1 or any other premium ball as opposed to a DT Solo?

I've played just about every 20-bucks-a-dozen ball out there, and I still think the DT Solo is the best bang for your buck. I'm intrigued by the Top-Flite Gamer, but haven't hit one yet.

Around the greens, the softer ball is much, much better, but low spin is better for most higher handicappers from the tees.

I would honestly recommend the b330rx for almost anyone. Everyone loves it who plays it. Many advantages. Last year's version of premium balls are typically easy to find on te web and pretty cheap.

I've played a Gamer and that's an awesome ball for under $20. Distance is off the charts, longer than B330 for me about 7-8 yards. Doesn't spin quite as much but for the money well worth it. Is buy them if I was in the market.
Buy the v2, the original scuffs too easy.

TopFlite's new ball. Came out last year. Original scuffed badly but they fixed it with the new one the v2. (version 2) Buy them at Wally world for @ $18. Best ball for the money, absolutely smokes NXT tour.

Got it. Isn't that a Callaway brand now?

I now play the TM Penta, which has proven to be a great ball, but all of them are essentially the same.

I'm currently working through a stash of last year's Taylormade Blacks, and I like them. They are soft enough to stop with iron shots, but they don't spin quite as much as some of the other top-line balls with the driver, so if I don't get the club face square, I'm a little more likely to be able to find it. It is a good balance for me, anyway.

My wife loves the old Nike Black, but it is too soft for me. She's a better player with a slower swing speed, though, so it fits her. She doesn't seem to think the new models--from this year and last--spin quite as much.

See, I'm in a constant battle here - I want a ball that's relatively low compression, which does give me more yards off the tee, but yet has at least moderate spin. My short game seems to feel better with the DT Solo as opposed to other low-compression, low-spin balls like the Noodle or Precept Laddie. I love how Pro V1's react around the greens, but it really does seem like I'm losing chunks of yardage with irons, especially wedges. Will look into the B300RX. Thanks.

I need to buy a dozen of these and give 'em a shot. I have this automatic bias against Top-Flite. I've tried the NXT and NXT Tour, with so-so results, and definitely prefer the Solo.

I have always hated TopFlite. For my entire life they have made the biggest bunch of junk. I generally have always called them RockFlite. That new Gamer ball is pretty impressive for the money.
I was turned onto them from trying the TopFlite Freak. I hang out in GolfWRX.com quite a bit and several suggested it for a distance ball. They weren't kidding, that ball is stupid long! Isn't good for anything but distance, but it doesn't claim to do anything but go far.

Playing in the morning. Buddy gave me a sleeve of Srixon Z Star x to play with. Claims after 3 holes I'll be hooked. (doubt it. I'm not good enough for the ball I play to make that much of a difference) I've been playing with Bridgestone B330. I like it a lot, great distance and still killer spin. (I bought 10 dozen of them on ebay)

Any you guys played a Srixon ball before?

I bought some Srixon Trispeed (not Trispeed Tour) at Global Golf for 16.99 a dz to try them. I was (mostly) using a Cal HX Hot Plus and liked it a lot. Now I think I like the Srixon better when I'm hitting a shot (in the vicinity of) to the green. Bought three more dz. I may change in fifteen minutes, though, since I just started back in May after not playing for over 10 years.

That's a lot of balls to go through in 15 minutes. 2.4 balls/minute. One ball every 25 seconds.

what kind of players are you? for most golfers, the kind of ball you play is almost irrelevant.

I don't think the differences are nearly as great as the manufacturers want you to think they are, but there's no doubt that different balls work better with different swings.
