I have been disappointed with the D and decided to look at some trends in the SEC. This info is a little different than just pts allowed and i thought worth sharing.

I have looked at all the SEC vs SEC games in 2016, 2019 and then this year and here is what I found.

2016:
41% scored 30 or more pts in the game played

21% scored 40 or more pts in their game

2019:
41% scored 30 or more pts

22% scored 40 or more pts

2020:
48% scored 30 or more pts
27% scored 40 or more pts

I find it interesting that from 2016-2019 those % didn’t move much at all and keep in mind LSU was a big part of those 2019 higher numbers.

I find it perplexing that the numbers have skyrocketed this year with a league full of inconsistent or down right bad QBs.

Of the past 6 National Championship winners 4 of them scored 42 or more points (in that game). Only one time did the winner score less than 35 points.

Coaches can easily see what is winning now days.......offense.

If teams like Bama, Clemson, Ohio ST....ect are trying to improve their offense, and playing more of an offensive minded game.......everyone else has to as well......or be left behind.

A lot of 3 and outs will do that to a defense.

I would be more interested in the efficiency from year to year. The thing that really matters is points per possession.

The days of smash mouth football are waning. The days of fast paced offenses with burners at the WR position are now starting to come to fruition.
The rules for pass interference favor the offense and targeting has neutered those bone crushing hits that guys used to have to worry about in the middle of the field.

I think to most of us, we have seen this change over the years. I was ok with the Chaney hire, but always said we needed someone more innovative and modern. Pruitt is a traditionalist that is going to have to learn to adapt

Our defense is the best unit on this team, but that’s not saying much. Its not great and it isn’t improving. I think it’s comparable in quality to the first three defenses Butch had, if not worse. So much for being a defensive-minded head coach.

The common denominator is players. Or talent.

You can decide to go "offensive" minded and you re still gonna lose or left behind, if the other guy is doing the same thing with better players.

And a lot of TOs as well. Unreal amount of picks this year thrown
One of the things that bothers me about this team are it's silly mistakes. That's coaching. You don't see Alabama or Clemson making silly mistakes. They play with intelligence. That's entirely coaching and player development.

People keep saying Pruitt is good at player development. There's simply no real evidence of that at this point in actual games. He's never been anything but an assistant coach and coordinator

Offense sells tickets and is great for TV ratings. Star players that have the skills to play either offense or defense are opting for offense because it is more flashy. You don't have punishing defense anymore because that gets you a flag.

Your last sentence is an interesting one. Maybe defenses are just playing tentative because of targeting rules and that’s leading to more missed tackles, fresher RBs in the 4th quarter, and receivers going across the middle more unafraid of being decapitated.

Well sure.....that happens no matter what you do.....O heavy....D heavy....both good....both bad.......but “if” you want to try and gain....you probably going to at least try and “join them.”
You really think other coaches are watching these same teams year after year being good......and their thinking.....hey we need to be different than that?

I’m only explaining the “general” switch to more offense......and seemingly not as great defense.

coaches see who is winning. They understand what they used to do......isn’t what’s working right now.

If you look across the country most of the best teams (consistently) now are more offensive minded.....than maybe they used to be.

Also the teams which are testing those teams also seem to be more offensive minded. Many of the “new comers” are also good offensive teams.

Right now “if” you want to keep up you must be more offensive minded. You have to be able to score......or you will probably not be keeping up.......or even gaining on the competition.

Football has always been about scoring. I don't understand why everyone thinks the game has "Changed" so much. I will GUARANTEE you that if I can run the ball consistently and STOP the run on defense consistently... against ANY team... I will win MANY many more than I lose. Slinging the ball all over the field will only take you so far. You have to be able to control the clock and game at some point. All these teams that score in the 40's, etc. would have limited opportunities if I can have long sustained drives by RUNNING the football. You can still score a ton with a dominant, run-first, offense.

I think this is why the refs allow so much offensive pass interference these days (ratings). I could certainly be wrong.

Thats a VERY good point! Not saying that OUR problem, but I would bet the farm there have been a bunch of defensive players second guessing themselves during a play. It's a DAMN shame these political hacks have ruined the great game. Protecting "defenseless" players is an absolute joke. If you don't want to play the game the way it is SUPPOSED to be played... don't! Pretty simple.
