The Final, Definitive, Determinative, Debate-Ending "Woooo" or No-"Woooo" Thread

@Boca Vol I'll refer you to the quote above your own.
I've been going to UT games since the early 80's on a regular basis and was at school there from 90-94 and there was no Woo.

See my post above from the '97 SEC CG...around the 54:00 mark the band is playing RT after a 1st down catch....No Woo from the crowd.

Maybe some band members did it but you couldn't hear them.

Longtime Lurker, very rare poster, but this thread is certainly worthy of it! As a Pride of the Southland alum, I am decidedly anti-Woo. It isn't part of the song.. the Osborne Brothers didn't sing it, the band doesn't "play" it. It would be my luck if the origins of the woo stem from the POTS (after all, we cannot sing the lyrics while we're playing, but could "woo" during the slight pause between notes).

BUT, people who sing the lyrics of the chorus along with the woo do not bother me near as much as those who only woo without singing the lyrics. People who woo without singing are either ignorant, lazy, or intentionally disrespecting "Rocky Top"... but they probably still consider themselves real fans, and likely think they even deserve a participation trophy. As another poster earlier referenced, all of Neyland singing "Rocky Top" in unison is much more powerful than the albeit louder "Woo" that only lasts for a second.

Thanks for posting....being a POTS alum I have a question for you. When and why did the POTS change the way Rocky Top is played? It was sometime in the early-mid 80's. I apologize for not knowing the "parts" of a song but look at this video from '75. Around the 14-15 second mark there is a repeat. The reason I ask is that at Lenoir City HS Ric Best always had the band play it that way. That "repeat" isn't there anymore. Do you know why? Thanks.

Wooing is for women, and children. Kind of the exception.. back in the day a juiced up Rick Flair. But hey, become one with your feminine side and woo your little hearts out.

Well before my time!! I was in the band in the early 90's. The instrumentation in your video sounds a little different, but the number of measures sounds about the same as I'm used to. The band version, at least since I was there, has always differed from the real version by getting to the chorus quicker. If you try to sing the full lyrics with the band version, you have to skip over "wild as a mink and sweet as soda pop... I still dream about that" to get to the Chorus. Also, I was not a music major... someone else could provide more technical details I am sure. :)

Thank you for the reply and you answered the question perfectly. That makes sense.

I hate the woo. I hate uniform changes. I like traditional. I was taken to games by my father and it wasn't there. I have great memories as a kid going to games. Going back now without my father and seeing the changes makes it feel different in a disappointing way. I feel like I'm pulling for a different team. There is my reason for the scowl and no woo.

You'll never get that toothpaste back in tube. Might as well embrace it. Like Andy Griffith says, learn to love 'em!

Never do I remember a WOO and I don't like it, but the kids do and I'll be gone long before them so I guess it will at some point be the only way that people remember it being done.

Don't have to like it, but I can't change it.

I asked my Magic 8 Ball and it said "Ask Again Later". So obviously this not "
The Final, Definitive, Determinative, Debate-Ending "Woooo" or No-"Woooo" Thread"
because the Magic 8 Ball would have said so.

I will never question the wisdom of the Magic 8 Ball......

IMO nothing is worse than the "Rohan Davie Curse". It is the gift that has kept on giving for 20 years.

This. It was the start of the 'Fulmer Clap', where he wouldn't really do anything when his game plan went to %^$# except clap his hands a little and grimace at each bad play.

Legend has it that John Chavis is still trying to figure out if the next play is a draw, and Randy Sanders is drawing up the PERFECT bubble screen on 2nd down.

The woo started becuz people are so friggin impatient they can't stand the one second of pause between "good ole rocky top (pause) rocky top Tennessee..." No no no...can't have that dreadful pause. Gotta fill it with something. How about "woooo"? God forbid we have to wait a half second before finishing the song. But...the wooo is here and its not going anywhere. Bunch of impatient caffeine addicts.

And I'm still hollering to throw the seam route to the TE. 😁
