The DeSantis containment thread -- all things DeSantis go here

Not saying he is any different. Hence my mention of the sort of freighting ambition I am detecting
But as Governor, he does have influence over the investment strategy pursued by his retirement fund appointees. He is much more than a common investor. States make political decisions to „divest“ from certain entities all the time. Not saying it is necessarily right, but it is clear that, if the left gets to play, why should we unilaterally disarm ourselves in response?

As Gov he can probably direct his pension fund to divest or even sue the BOD like any other stockholder. I hope that's all he's threatening to do, anything else would be out of line.

The only things he can do to the BOD is what any other stockholder can do. If he tries to get some punitive legislation passed he's no different than the Dems.
I took it as a stockholder path, not legislature. Idk what he could do on the legislative front and that would be on the state house for passing a dumb law

Is he just threatening to end some special privileges Disney has? I'm not sure why that would be an abuse of power. It's just correcting a wrong.

The scare tactics have begun. The Mouse House is showing its desperation

It’s a thread that seems to have been live tweeting FL senate deliberations. One Republican senator was wondering why they’re giving $2 billion in corporate welfare to Disney to attack Disney. 😂

I don’t know how the bond works, but it will be interesting to see if Floridians are willing to pay more in taxes to own the libs.

Disney has done more for Florida than any other entity. PERIOD. They moved here based upon that deal with the state.

Or simply increase taxes on Disney and make them pay their own way. Disney is the largest property owner there, they should shoulder the biggest part of the burden

If I'm not mistaken, Disney is responsible for their own water, sewer, trash, fire and security (police) all the services a city would provide so I don't see how striping their autonomous provision away will save the state or surrounding cities any money?

By taxing what? Anything that is done to tax Disney will apply to others. You can’t just single out one entity and declare a tax on their existence.

Hmmm ever heard of the tax on tobacco, alcohol?
Sorry, when I say “entities” I’m talking about businesses or individuals. Anything done to increase Disney’s tax burden will likely affect other entities in Florida’s tourism industry.

Disney brings a BOATLOAD of money to this state. Orlando would still nothing. The day Disney announced his plans, the governor called it the most significant day in the history of Florida and there's been nothing since to top it.

Biden is proposing special taxes on billionaires. Heck the graduated tax brackets are special taxes on individuals. The AMT was supposed to be a special tax on a class of individuals so it has to be doable at least at the federal level, don't have a clue about the FL constitution or laws.

DeSantis continues to pick dumb fights. This will cost tax payers in the short term early as I'm sure the army of Disney's lawyers will have this tied up in legal challenges for a millennia. In the long term, the bond repayment that the tax payers could be responsible for will be a tough pill to swallow.

All over the Disney President not having any choice but to go "woke" over a STUPID, unnecessary bill or face a mass revolt but it's thousands of ee's? This is ill advised posturing by DeSantis.

Agreed, that doesn’t give them license to bite the hand that allowed them to prosper. Florida laid out the red carpet for Disney for the last 50’years and how did Disney repay that kindness? Basically call the governor, legislature, and votes homophobic bigots and threaten to basically become an unregistered PAC tasked with unseating elected officials. They also basically said they were more qualified to dictate the educational course of Florida Children that’s the parents of Florida who elected the legislature and (according to polls) clearly support the measure.
So if Disney wants to PLAY politics, they have no right to complain when politics plays them.

I would wager that Disney contributes more to the state coffers than any other entity in Florida.

Disney may have “created” modern Orlando; but there is now a complete ecosystem in place. Dollars not spent at Disney will just now cross the street to Universal, Seaworld, and Busch Gardens. Disney is not the only 500 pound gorilla in the area anymore

I'd argue that Disney is one of the major reasons Florida has prospered.

It is indeed. Does that give them the right to now turn and bite their host?
Disney World would never have even existed had the State of Florida not made it so easy for Walt to gobble up so much cheap swamp land and then improve it with basically no bureaucratic hurdles

Stated a political disagreement. When should that warrant reneging on promises made? And when did you trumpers start talking about being grateful to the government. Isn't the government just stealing money from disney? Shouldn't disney pay less in taxes? Interesting how you morph from one side to the other.

Nope, Disney themselves made the decision to stop being a simple business and decided they wanted to dictate terms to the government. When they did that they lost all claims to being an innocent company. They are a PAC now and if they didn’t want To play hardball, they shouldn’t have suited up and stepped on the field. They chose to Pick a fight with a wildly popular governor and a solidly Republican legislature. It’s gametime now. And Disney can’t complain

I'd argue that lots of sunshine, beaches, well-run state and lack of snow are the major reasons Florida has prospered. Disney could have located in Michigan, but for these reasons, they didn't.
