DeSantis broaches Repeal of Disney World's Special Self-Governing Status in Florida

Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis addressed on Thursday the suggestion of repealing a 55-year-old state law that allows Disney to effectively govern itself on the grounds of Walt Disney World, following the company’s public opposition to a controversial parental rights law in Florida.

"What I would say as a matter of first principle is I don’t support special privileges in law just because a company is powerful and they’ve been able to wield a lot of power," DeSantis said during a press conference in West Palm Beach, Florida on Thursday.

DeSantis referenced a bill reining in big tech that Republicans were working through the legislature last year when Disney added a "carve out" at the "11th hour" for theme parks.

"I’m thinking to myself, ‘This is ridiculous,’" DeSantis said. "Honestly, it was embarrassing."

DeSantis continued, "I think what has happened is there’s a lot of these special privileges that are not justifiable, but because Disney had held so much sway, they were able to sustain a lot of special treatment over the years."

This will be fun. They aren't going anywhere either.

"Yesterday was the 2nd meeting in a week w/fellow legislators to discuss a repeal of the 1967 Reedy Creek Improvement Act, which allows Disney to act as its own government," Roach tweeted. "If Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seems fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County."

That sounds so stupid. Got to love super important local govt officials

No worse than a liberal company trying to invoke it's woke beliefs on the state that voted for and approved the legislation that they wanted. Disney is a company and as a company they have no right to dictate policy to the state.
They voiced their displeasure with a needless bill. The ussc says that is acceptable

Can we instate and enforce this as a nationwide policy please, including financial campaign contributions?

No you just need a smarter electorate. There are people hoping for another Trump v Biden POTUS election.

A legit 3rd party option would take from both. Fiscally conservative, socially liberal encompasses way more people than either party would admit. It's why they act like those matter every few years to take back the lead

You're talking about only the presidency. I was speaking about congress.

So no he and she at Disney anymore...Rather stupid if you ask me. Yet the political divide continues.
If they had not done this...nobody would GAF

No I'm taking about the tribalism running thru all our govt. Team politics and the low info electorate eats it up

At the end of the day there is really only one team. Most of the rest is just showboating.

And most people don't GAF that they did it. I just don't get why it bothers so many of you.

I thought Republicans were, generally speaking, in favor of policies which reduced government intrusion into the private sector?

Sorry..but if you cannot see the stupidity of this proclamation that NEVER had to be made in the first place.

Ron DeSantis: Biden’s ‘Reckless Open Borders Policies’ Kept Illegal Alien, Indicted for Murdering Couple, in U.S.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) is blasting President Joe Biden’s “reckless open borders policies” for helping keep an accused illegal alien killer in the United States.

As Breitbart News reported this month, Jean Robert Macean, a 32-year-old illegal alien from Haiti, is accused of murdering a husband and wife — 55-year-old Brenda Aultman and 48-year-old Terry Aultman.

According to the Daytona Beach Police Department, the Aultmans were riding their bikes back to their home following a day at the Bike Week festival when they were encountered by Macean. At that point, police believe Macean stabbed and slashed the Aultmans to death as their bodies were found in a grassy area close to the sidewalk.

Macean is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and was indicted this week.

DeSantis, in a statement, revealed that Macean had been charged with drug crimes in Orange County, Florida, in 2019, but the charges were “inexplicably dropped” by former Florida State Attorney Aramis Ayala, a Democrat, in February 2020.

“Floridians should not be subject to the reckless open border policies that the Biden administration is imposing on this country,” DeSantis said. “These policies are deadly — we also need answers as to why the State Attorney’s Office dropped charges against the defendant.”

Biden’s recent granting of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to more than 100,000 Haitian nationals in the U.S. helped keep Macean in the country before he went on to allegedly murder the Aultmans, DeSantis said.

I get the play he is making. Attack anything you can label as "woke" or something similar. Photo ops. Outrageous statements. We saw it when Trump would attack the cameras and media at his rallies. Crowd ate it up. DeSantis once again copying Trump in this regard.

But he's taking a gamble here. If he doesn't get the WH he's got to live with the 800 pound gorilla that is Disney. They are very powerful for a reason. Might backfire.

Disney is in fact very powerful, but their power can be significantly diminished. They are not invincible.

Skeered. Geez dude, you new to politics or need a mirror reflection?
Totally outrageous

My .02 outside of this bill.

You want to improve public school performance? Stop worrying about the teachers. Start participating. Join the PTA. Become a room mom/dad. Volunteer at events. Email you kid's teachers regularly. Get to know the teachers in more than just a parent teacher conference day kind of way. Become a fixture at the school.

The parents that make the most noise are usually the ones you never see at any school functions. Don't be that Karen.
Funny thing there, when parents started actually trying to do that last year, Biden put the DOJ onto them and started labeling them as terrorists….:
So what I THINK you mean is, “get involved as long as you already agree with the brainwashing we are already doing”

Indeed. The Florida parks are a large part of what kept Disney solvent during covid when movie Theaters and the California parks were sidelined. A decision by Florida to not renew the next round of tax breaks for the Parks or some cancellations of sweetheart deals for access to Florida infrastructure could really make Mickey wake up with a headache. The state of Florida holds a lot of cards. Florida can function without Disney World. Disney world cannot function without the goodwill of Florida.
