Still f'n mad. Woke up mad. First article I read is an AtoZ Sports article about the officiating. Link below
I 100% believe the game was influenced and changed due to the officiating. Can't 100% say the Vols or Bama for that matter would have played the same had the game been called correctly. Field position, game situation, and momentum influence play calling for every team.
I'm mad because I spent 4 hours watching something so unnatural it was fake. There is bad officiating in almost every game with missed or phantom calls but this went way past that and became so egregious it was obvious.
Yes there is poor play calling and yes Milton is hot garbage and yes the Vols didn't execute but rarely if ever does any team get that perfect. Tennessee was forced to be perfect while playing 2 hand touch and Bama was allowed to play Mortal Combat with cheat codes.
There is an expression, which came first the chicken or the egg, in this game it was obvious the bad calls from the officials came first then the play calling and execution issues followed for the Vols. Vice-versa Bama got the calls then their execution improved greatly. The refs changed the game in every way they possibly could. You will be hard pressed to find a drive they didn't change the outcome of in the second half by influencing field position and changing momentum. Even add in a few from the first half to be completely honest.
Since I know the SEC will not do anything about it and I know it will continue to happen. I must decide if I still enjoy this sport. I love the Vols but I'm left wondering if I love a sport for what it once was or what it has become.
Headed to work then playing some golf. Notice no NFL for me as I gave up on it for the same reasons 4 years ago. Heck I used to watch college ball all day long now I'm down to the Vols game and bits and pieces of a few random others.
Just not a fan of football turning into professional wrestling. At least in wrestling they don't hide it's fake.
First, who was the reporter who used the 2 hand touch/mortal combat line in Heupel's post game presser? Quite good so it deserves attribution. I'm not impressed with Milton as a QB, but he played his ass off yesterday. Hot garbage is your take on him. As for Sunday mornings like, this...well...

In all college football (whose stats were reported), the only other team that I saw who had one penalty or none was Houston.

Its the feel good story of the year that the 96th ranked team in the country in terms of penalties only committed one this game. Someone should make a 30 for 30 about it. Truly incredible.

That’s why it’s an invalid signal and not a valid signal. Too many keep getting caught up in it wasn’t a true/legit fair catch call, that’s the whole point; they’re waving their hands emphatically potentially throwing people off without calling an actual fair catch. I don’t agree with it, cause all defenders know he’s just telling his guys to get away. Dee didn’t motion/move at all, he locked his arms. Zero potential for confusion for the defense.

I always thought you had to actually wave to signal a fair catch... These refs are horrible anymore, may be crooked at least some of them..

Clearly the head of the NCAA officiating group told the officials recently that those type “fair catch” plays are a point of emphasis. You don’t get two such rare and horrible calls without some direction from above.
And those clowns, in an attempt to look good to their bosses, made idiotic calls.

Can’t disagree with any of that

Too bad there isn’t a system where ref get PFF grades publicly posted after every game and they get exposed for their biases, it would be awesome to have the grades posted for calls missed against each team by each ref.

I have absolutely no problem admitting when Tennessee loses. The Georgia game last year, yes, Tennessee was outmatched and clearly lost. It was reasonably evenly called. Same for South Carolina last year. Florida this year, yes there were bad calls but Tennessee deserved to lose.

But this Alabama game rattles any confidence that I had that we're seeing a real event unfold over four hours instead of something where the outcome has been scripted or at least altered while it is in process. The officiating crew were given clear instructions to get Alabama through the game at any cost. That is exactly what they did in ways that weren't subtle. The SEC meddles in games where they have a vested interest in, pure and simple.

Well, we might be mad about it, but I hope the players are mad, stay mad all week, and go up there and take it out on Kentucky.

I didn't see the 2nd half but I have trouble believing that officiating was mostly responsible for the 27-point pasting we suffered in
the last two quarters.

The officiating isn't responsible for the loss, but there were too many questionable calls, non-calls, and marks, many at critical points in the game, to simply say it was a non-issue. What is responsible for the loss is primarily that the team came out unprepared in the 2nd half for what was certainly going to be a desperate Alabama team. Hell, Herring said the Vols thought they had the game won at halftime - sadly, that points the finger at the coaches.

Once the momentum switched, UT lost all focus - the defense wasn't getting after Milroe like they were in the 1st half and the play calling on offense became incredibly conservative, like Josh was playing not to lose. His decision to go for it on 4th down at midfield was a horrible one, especially given the momentum swing. We needed to stabilize the game, and he gambled at a point where he couldn't afford to.
