The Culinary Arts Thread

Pure aloe is best, take it from someone that burns on occasion. Butter is never a good idea, seals in the burn, if just home remedies, mushed up raw .potato will pull out the burn, but it takes awhile (during that time, run to the local drug store and grab some burn cream).

Much respect to those who use the old time recipes, because I grew up on them too, but no butter. Get that burned tissue under cold running water to keep the cooking from going any deeper. (Did I just reverse-sear my hand?)

It looks like most of the burned area is between first and second degree burn, with a nice little white line of third degree burn from the handle edge across the base of my palm, which doesn’t hurt at all, of course. (Cooked the surface nerves.)

DH offered to run to the store, but we’ve both been relaxin’ a bit too much. I’ll go with what I have for now.

Oh well, no biggie in the great scheme of things. Live and learn. For the next few years anyway.

It wrong to laugh real hard at this? Sorry you're hurt. Who sells the sleeves? Googled. I'm buying some these tomorrow
No, it’s not at all wrong! I’m the eternal mom, always fussing over everyone else. (But yes, if he wasn’t doing the cooking and therefore wasn’t aware of the hot handle, he would have totally grabbed it.)

This pan was stainless steel, but I bought some of those sleeves for the cast iron ware, especially when we use them on the grill. They are great!!!

I recommend spending 7-10 bucks on a pair of the silicon ones over the cloth.

If you know anyone that works in a restaurant, ask them if they have any. Most use the same aluminum fry pans that come with the blue silicon handle sleeve and the cooks pull them off and toss them first thing.

—this would have been a lot more enjoyable had I not grabbed the bare handle of the skillet sitting on the rangetop that had been in the 400 degree oven for 20 minutes with my bare right hand to move it out of the way. Waaaahhh. I haven’t done that in years.

I have temporarily suspended the prohibition on alcohol for phase 1 of South Beach, because frankly, this hurts like a sonuvabitch.

Dinner tasted great, other than the bit about DH having to cut up my food for me.
Maroon!

— I question the usefulness of the helmets if something goes wrong. Other than to hold the goggles on, I suppose.

Thing is, most of the brain buckets used by skydivers today are not impact rated (I know of one - $400+). I wear a helmet to ward against incidental contact in freefall (e.g. somebody kicks you during a transition between formations). I know that it's not going to do much to protect me in high-impact situations. A number of jumpers wear helmets as camera mounts (gotta have that video). Helmets are also useful if/when one needs to PLF. Banging the bare noggin on the ground will give anybody a headache.

I'm not aware of anything available to the general public that allows to you place in an oven at 350-500 degrees for 30-45 minutes and remove without using something to protect your hands from burns.

Hey @VolNExile, you find some aloe juice and how is the burn on your hand doing?
No juice, but the cortisone cream with aloe was magic!

Barely tender at all, and only some red spots where the handle touched. Even the little white stripe is mostly gone. Whew.

Thank you again for mentioning aloe! It would have been a bad night without it.

Short term memory loss, Nancy? You brought up the Point Break remake. I post arguably the highlight of the film. VolNExile asked me a question, and I answered. Your need to troll getting the better of you...

With a vocabulary like the one you have most everyone convinced you have, one would think you would have practiced faking reading comprehension too.
