The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

I think there's quite a few coaches that could be successful at Tennessee. Maybe they don't ever have a 35 game home winning streak, but maybe they win the SECT?

In the grand scheme I think there's quite a few coaches who could make this a top 20 program, consistent NCAAT appearances, and frequent trips to the sweet 16 or further.

Who, if Martin is out at the end of the season, I don't see a lot of guys lining up for the job.

Just going off the NCAA site, looks like during green era it was around 16k and Pearl era averaged around 19k.

I'm guessing student enrollment and Knoxville population increased in that time period as well though.

I was there during both eras.....huge differences in the crowds

Ben Howland has been to multiple final fours,
I think we could land him at a decent price.

Lawrence Frank is unproven, but I think he would definitely bring an excitement level to the program and think he would crush it in recruiting.

After that it comes down to what would we spend. Would we throw enough money at Marshall or Smart to really get their interest? My guess is no, but only one way to find out right?

Based on my fading memory, I don't recall the arena being as filled during the Green era as it was for Pearl. It would be interesting to compare, but since I'm not aware of any official numbers other than paid attendance, I don't suppose it's possible.

People didn't like Green. He had little personality. Had less chin. And his Gumby arm flail at the refs along with hos body language was annoying to many.

You can hate it all you want but it's true. Even during Pearls best year we weren't selling out, we aren't Kentucky, we don't have their fanbase....it may hurt but it's true.

It was six yrs and an elite eight......u don't build Kentucky in six yrs.....is it possible? Yes

Your opinion? Dickey came out afterwards and said he was given the option. Those close to Green said he wasn't fired but felt he wasn't gonna have full support so decided to step aside.

That's what they say when u resign instead of being fired....they don't give u a over million dollar buyout for quitting

Florida has 2 national championships under their current coach and still has trouble selling out a 10k seat arena some nights.

Duke has as much history as anybody, but they don't sell out every single game and they also play in a 10k seat arena.

North Carolina is the closest thing to Kentucky and they don't sell out their arena.

You'll never convince me that we could sell out a 24k seat arena on a consistent basis like Kentucky does.

So then he may not have actually been fired for filling the arena?

No he didn't fill it every night, I recall a lot of empty orange seats in the upper deck when he was HC. And when Ky came to town there was almost as much blue as Orange in the stands.

Back in those days TBA held 25K.

Well we aren't, sorry you don't like it, but we aren't. And in this discussion I'm talking about the arena, nothing else.

We won't put 24k butts in seats on a consistent basis, argue it all you want, you'll look foolish doing so.

We were up to right at 20,000 in six yrs....that's pretty dang close

Pearls tenure averaged right at 19k. That's a great number, but once again, it's not the 24k Kentucky averages.

You're talking about the most exciting stretch in Tennessee basketball history, and they were still south of 20k.

As you eluded to already, tickets sold aren't always the actual number there either. I was at a lot of the Pearl coached games, and attendance may have been announced at 19k and it was actually 14k.

An arena around 14-15k would be the perfect size for Tennessee. It would be filled at a much higher percentage, and when it was filled the place would be rocking.
