The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

I've described my objection repeatedly. It's the same objection I think most major athletic departments will have . . . just sayin.

Is Tennessee not confident enough in our NCAA compliance group that we wouldn't hire him?

We can't get worse with Pearl. That is a fact. He has stayed relevant. He would inherit a talented team. He has been involved in the community and perhaps most importantly everyone except you (media, etc) seem to be sympathetic to his situation.

Let me also add, why would the NCAA keep punishing Bruce Pearl after he served his time? Cant prosecute people twice for the same crime.

This comes down to contract language pertaining to the short Bruce Pearl leash.

The administration is very sensitive to the lack of school pride in anything. I think it's the perfect time for Pearl who is a VFL.

Sympathetic to his situation? You've got to be kidding. He lied to the NCAA, got the program in hot water and got himself fired. Stop acting like I'm being mean to a cancer victim.

This is why I'm loathe to have a debate about this. Somehow there's a dynamic at work where if I don't want Pearl back, it must be because I'm a moralist, heartless, a Cuonzo supporter or simply a hater. It's amazing.

and losing his job, millions of dollars, and embarrassment isn't punishment enough for something as stupid as lying about a bbq?

High horse up there. Don't get a nosebleed.

The only high horse is the one whose ass your head is in right now.

I don't know your reasons for why you don't want him back??

Is it because you don't trust him?

The University had no pain because we fired him. If he pays his price, what is the harm in bringing him back honestly.

Of COURSE I don't trust him. How could anybody fully trust him given his history.

As far as the pain to the university . . . He brought NCAA scrutiny and forced a coaching transition when there didn't need to be one.

I love Bruce, but I hope he doesn't come back. His history would always be used against him in recruiting.

Dayton's Archie Miller would be a great hire.

Fair enough. I believe the risks can be managed through internal controls and contract clauses. That's the difference between you and I.

I also think the guy deserves a second chance and has shown he is committed to Knoxville and not just completely self interest in coaching anywhere he can. I think he loves the community and University. I don't know of any other coach that can bring that to the table.

Do you?

True, but he is great with the ladies.

I'm sure he does still love UT and the area . . . but he's under an NCAA Show Cause penalty. A Junior College in Idaho effectively can't touch him right now.

The sad part of this is I sat right in front of Bruce Pearl at the 2006 UGA game in Athens and talked to him off and on over a 3 hr period. He was, and I'm sure still is, a really nice guy. He's just a nice guy that I'd rather not have as a basketball coach.

Turned down multiple professional opportunities, allegedly, right? Head coach for Development league, assistant in NBA?

That could be. But I wouldn't think any more or less of his love for Tennessee based on that. I'm sure he turned them down because he could do better in Knoxville and doing TV work.

Can somebody help me with reasons why we shouldn't, or can't, hire Pearl back? There are plenty of pros to hiring him back but the cons seem lower and the people that say there are plenty never actually give those reasons.

I guess it would look bad if the university that fired him hired him back again? Some of the people involved in that decision aren't here anymore.

Just curious and wanted to get some solid input. Go Vols.
