The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

Of course I want to win but Pearl isn't the only coach that can make us a winning program. It just seems like no matter what, people want Pearl back and I was curious if people actually thought Tennessee would hire him back. It's laughable but anything bad that happens in our program, "bring Pearl back" is used frequently.

Apparently you didn't notice the poll taken by BTO where 78% of the fans wanted Pearl back. These fans are pesky about wanting to win, shame on them.

And how well would that translate to recruiting when Pearl is sitting in the living rooms of some of these kids and talking to their parent.

"I broke the rules, I lied about it, lost my job, created a HUGE black cloud over my schools head but please trust me that I will take care of your son for the next 3-4 years".

Even though the rule is stupid and lying about it was dumb, he still got caught lying and that says things about his character. And before some say that all coaches lie and cheat...maybe but ours got caught. Also, you have no idea what kind of staff he would bring. Your talking about a staff that was together a long, long time. There is no WAY those guys come back with Pearl and his staff is just as important as he is.
This is such a stupid statement. He did not get caught, He went to them and acknowledged he made a big mistake..."BIG DIFFERENCE"

WTF is wrong with you? The dude is not our coach and is not coming back so what gives? You are either crazy or really believe this AD would actually hire back a guy that got a show cause and got our program put on probation. I don't agree with the penalties (most don't) but it is what it is. Why is it so hard to accept this? I don't understand.

Pearl did ALOT with the limited talent that he had on the team. We went from one extreme to the other in one season by firing Buzz and hiring Pearl.

This coach is not motivating the players. He has lost to Austin Peay. He has lost to College of Charleston. Those are definately teams with inferior talent.

He has also led us to losses in the 1st round of the N.I.T.

His team is far more talented than the one that Pearl had, yet he is not getting it done.

Talent wise, this is a top #25 team, but we will once again qualify for the N.I.T. by underachieving....

Not saying that Pearl should return, but we have seen that basketball can be a winning program at U.T. and expect to go to the NCAA a couple of times each 5 years....

Martin is not getting it done. He can recruit though!!!!!!!

Best ever - yes - my opinion - yes I'm entitled - he was just getting started - was in line to getting some amazing players - every body in sports gets a second chance right - ie drugs , Steroids, dog fighting, DUI With vehicle homicide, but Pearl is on a black list, not to be hired ?Because he lied about a Barbecue? You're probably right are asinine administration and athletic director won't hire him -my worst fear -he is hired by either LSU, Memphis, Or some other mid-major program - And leads them to the promised land Year after Year - And we're on our third coach by then saying what were we thinking

Name one coach that's ever lied to the NCAA and landed a program on probation that's then gotten a second chance right back where he got in trouble. There's just no way the AD can do that.

Also, people seem to only think of the Pearl days in terms of his first couple of years when we were running all the time. His last couple of seasons, the offense, and especially his lack of ever having a PG, looked similar to what we saw last night. I loved the success under Pearl, but people need to stop acting like he's the only guy that knows how to coach and elevating him to John Wooden status.

all this after 1 game.
and come on... the guys shot horribly on the road in many of their first game...
CCM has them playing D and this team will win 20...
I loved CBP but CCM is our coach and he will is getting int done.

How long do you think the lies Martin tells these kids is going to hold up? "We are going to the tournament, sign with us if you want to be in on it."

Pearl is widely loved in the media and clearly has proven himself as a coach. On the same level as Ricky P no but neither is explaining the indiscretion to a recruits family IMO

Bruce Pearl isn't the coach of the defending National Champions either. Right or wrong, some families are going to overlook his indiscretion because of that.

BP doesn't have that luxury.

I don't think Martin will coach at UT for very much longer but I sure don't think Pearl is the answer or even a possibility.

I miss his explosvie style on offense but besides being a fun guy and being passionate, I didn't care that much for Pearl. His defense was horrible and we didn't have a half court game. If we wasn't turning people over or pushing the ball constantly, we wasn't scoring. I don't think his style of play is suitable for good guard play.

FTR, I'm not comparing Martin and Pearls coaching style. I'm just simply asking why people can't let it go. Surely people don't think he's really going to get a job offer from Tennessee if Martin doesn't work out.

Isn't one of the guys who was in on the decision to fire Pearl still at U.T., as the President, or at some capacity?

I heard on ESPN radio that one of the guys was still at U.T. and he would block Pearl from coaching at U.T. again.

Plus, I doudt his return would be as successful as his initial stint here.

My bet is that he will end up at Boston College or somewhere else but not in the S.E.C. and certainly not at U.T.

With the team we have now, Pearl or Jerry Green could coach them to a better record than Martin will be able to.

He's a great coach and possibly the best one Tennessee has ever had but HE is the one who screwed up. HE is the one who had the BBQ at his house and lied to the NCAA about it. If he would have told the truth then it wouldn't have been such a big deal but he didn't. He's served his time here and he has no reason to coach Tennessee again. I don't know why it's so hard for you guys to get that through your skulls. Get over it already! Jeez.

The AD or anyone making decisions would listen to the money. I don't think that's an issue.

Not a big sample size

How big does it need to be? We can all rattle off names from the past 20 years of guys that got caught cheating and had to go somewhere else. If you fired your accountant for getting in trouble with the IRS, would you be the one to rehire him?

It's just not right to mention to mention Jerry Green's name in the same sentence with Pearl. No similarities there whatsoever.

Pearl had better guard play than CCM has had during his tenure. Not that Pearl will ever coach here again - that ship has sailed (but it would be nice if somehow someway that could make it happen (but only a fantasy)).

Name all the great guards Pearl had other than Lofton, Smith and Watson who he inherited. It was a parade of Ramar Smith, Bobby Maze, Trae Golden and JP Prince types that could do certain things but were maddeningly inconsistent.

If they had done a hell of a job, improved my business upon their return, and had paid their penalty. Yes I would rehire them

I haven't clamored for bringing back Pearl. Some on here know I was a huge supporter of BP and the program. As a matter of fact, for being called a pearlophite or whatever name children start using, I don't know that I have brought him up or posted about him in the last 2 years as I turned my attention to supporting the current coach.
With that said, if crap like last night doesn't make you yearn for the days of entertaining and winning basketball, there is really nothing to be said.

THIS. I am a Cuonzo Martin fan, but last night I thought about Pearl and his style with those players. Not gonna lie.
