Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

When will I shut up? The day Cunozo shows me his team can consistently do any of the following; defend a high ball screen, play a modicum of ANY zone D, defend against a quality PG dribble-drive, execute a timely entry pass to the post, teach Stokes how to pass out of a double team, execute a critical 'set play' out of a time out, set the pace of play instead of letting the opponent dictate it....

Cuonzo's got a great story. He was a helluva fine player. He's a man of character and a wonderful father. He is not yet a good coach who should get one more year to show progress.

Pearl struggled with a lot of these things as well, but there's a lot of truth in this post.

So you answer a question with a question. That is your answer? Again I expected too much from VolNation.

Considering most of the so-called "Pearl hate" is simply people who are tired of reading about the guy, yeah, that was a serious answer.

I'd say it's a fair question. There is some irrational hate. There's also a faction that act as if Bruce is John Wooden.

Both are crazy. The real divide IMO is how it relates to CCM and the future of the program. I think most appreciate what he did here and also condemn his actions that led to his removal. I just don't see why it has to be brought up in every thread.

One big reason is because CCM has yet to reach the AA tourney and has yet to meet Pearl's accomplishments in the tourney. Not being argumentative just stating an opinion.

I would agree with this statement. The thing is that the HC of the basketball Vols will be judged by Pearl's accomplishments until that coach or next coach exceeds those marks set by Pearl.

Tired of reading about Pearl, in the Pearl thread?

Do you ever open the New Testament and say "wtf, why won't they shut up about this Jesus guy?"

Why so much hate for CBP, seriously?

I think this is the problem with a messageboard, everything gets put into black and white containers, i.e. either you love Pearl or you hate him.

I don't hate him at all, I was very sad he was fired. I think he could have been here his whole career and I think he seriously could have made UT a consistent national power. He also made UT basketball an event, not just some afterthought between football seasons. He had people actually caring for basketball, and at UT that is saying a lot.

But I also think he only has himself to blame, and so in that regard I don't feel sorry for him. I don't buy all the excuses and the rationalizing done for him; he lied to the NCAA, he got fired.

I think the posts about missing him and wanting him back are a complete waste of time because it's not going to happen. I think constantly bringing him up is silly. I think comparing Martin to him is incredibly unfair (right now at least).

It's completely possible to love Pearl and not make excuses for his dismissal, and at the same time support Martin, not call for his head every other day, not constantly point out he's not Pearl AND say if he doesn't get it done next year, he should be out.

Wel done sir. :good!:

And I think it's unfair to Martin to expect him to do so, as I think (as do many others) that he inherited worse than Pearl did. I know you disagree and you've stated why.

I agree with much of what you have said here.... You can like Pearl and support CCM!

But I do think that the proverbial measuring stick was lengthened by CBP. I do not believe that expecting CCM to lead the Vols to the AA tourney is unfair; I would expect any coach to take UT to the AA tourney. Anything less is mediocre in my opinion.

I don't disagree about the measuring stick, as I hope the measuring stick is making the NCAAT and I hope we never get back to where it was a surprise we made it. Given it was a coaching change and conditions weren't ideal of him coming in, I was willing to give Martin a season or two and for the most part he did ok.

What is frustrating to me is that both this year and last you can point to 2-3 games that decided our fate. Next year we need to safely be in the field and while making it will make him definitely safe, I'd love to at least win one in the tourney.
