The Bruce Pearl Thread

Would you be for Bruce Pearl's return if Martin is fired after next year?

Pretty heavy for a barbecue. IMO. 'Course, the AA makes up stuff as they go along. Makes them feel better about their self righteous selves.

Indeed. It wasn't the BBQ. It was the sauce.

An AD like Dickey would have made the whole thing go away no problem and no one would be worried one iota about "character". One has to look squarely at Hambone (again) for the whole mess.

Personally, I don't think Hart should be allowed to screw-up the Pearl rehire, but if he does, I hope they bring in Dustin Colquitt to punt him off the Hill.

An AD like Dickey would never have hired Pearl.

I keep seeing this comment about Dickey, and the ironic thing is a coach like Martin is probably better than any idiot that moron would have hired.

I think the heaviness is due to lying about the BBQ, not the BBQ itself.

Yea big deal. Who wouldn't lie about about a BBQ knowing their job is at stake? Think about it. Would you risk your job over a BBQ? I don't blame him. He served his time. The NCAA knows he served his time. They aren't going to bring down the hammer of thor on UT if we hire pearl back, and to think they would is asinine.

This is one of the goofiest dynamics in this whole debate. People want to win so badly that they try to gloss over a dishonest (and stupid) move by Pearl and blame it on Hamilton so they can rationalize overlooking Pearl's flaws and brining him back. It's like blaming your son because your daughter got a DUI.

And I've got news for you. Dickey never cared enough about basketball to head off anything.

To this day, I still don't get why he risked it to lie about something so stupid. Why didn't he either refuse to answer, just say "ok, you got me" or just deny, deny, deny. He chose the 4th and dumbest option.

Perhaps. But I'm not so sure he wouldn't have gotten fired regardless and he didn't know for sure either way.

So if you're pearl, you are operating under the assumption you might get fired if you tell the truth and you might get fired if you lie and get caught.

Not saying it was the best move, but it was at the very least understandable. In the end, he was punished accordingly and I don't believe the NCAA would hold it against him. Hell, they could tout him as a NCAA success story like those reformed criminals.

We're not praising Dickey on his basketball accomplishments. But if he was AD at the time of Bruce's little itty bitty mishap, he wouldn't have let Slive and the NCAA butch slap us in front of the nation.

The original infraction was nowhere near severe enough that it would've forced UT to fire him had he been honest with the NCAA from the beginning.

The original infraction would have amounted to nothing but a smack on the hand. When he decided to lie to the NCAA, it took it to a whole other level.

Loved CBP, but that was one stupid decision that there is no recovery (here) from IMO.

Exactly.

The holier-than-thou crowd and their genuflections to the NCAA are ridiculous as well. I feel absolutely certain at least 100 more serious violations take place at every major college program every recruiting season, including ours.

Saying we would not hire Pearl back because of the BBQ and the little white lie is criminal.

Stop acting like he lied about his weight. He lied to an NCAA investigator who was holding a picture of people he knew on the inside of his house. You forgive the mistake, but ego and stupidity are forever.

In all honestly, does anybody on here seriously believe Bruce Pearl will coach at Tennessee again? I've seen a million threads about him and I think everybody is going overboard over this. In my opinion, I don't think he's ever going to coach at Tennessee again. He's already served his time here. Considering he's been in trouble with the NCAA, I just don't see Tennessee taking a chance of the NCAA being on our backs again if we did hire him back. Do I see a coaching change in the future if we don't see improvement this year or the next? Yes, but I don't think it'll be Bruce Pearl. So the question is, why is everyone obsessing with Bruce Pearl on here? Can they not accept reality anymore? I just don't get it...

This won't go well.

F the NCAA. I say we hire Pearl back but more closely monitor his grilling activities.

In all seriousness, I'd like to think the NCAA is not that petty and vindictive as to exact revenge for re-hiring CPB but who knows.

Who cares what the NCAA says or does. It's not like we are making the tourneys with our current coach. At least I would enjoy watching them play again.

I just want to know one thing. For all the people that don't want Pearl back, what are y'all going to say if he goes to Georia, Alabama, Auburn, LSU, or MSU and we have to play him twice a year and beats us and the rest of the league?

Most people would love to have him back, they just happen to understand that it isn't likely or realistic to expect him to be hired again considering how and why he was terminated in the first place.

The people that actually don't want him back mostly feel that way because they feel he unethically violated rules and his actions impacted UT negatively, which is true. Him being fired has in part caused this mess of a team we are watching this season....because Pearl isn't here coaching them. Those people have blackballed Pearl. I imagine those people would not care if he were at UGA and beating us...because that isn't the point for them.

His job wasn't at stake until he lied.

And, he's not getting hired by any of those teams. This is going to be really fun to revisit when he gets his next job.

Right, and it will be after next season before he gets hired by anyone IMO because the show cause is in effect until August of 2014.
