The Blueprint

Gruden is a rock star and all about his image. But coaching wise there just ain’t much meat there. Won a SB with Monte Kiffins defense.

Saban had already established himself in college with an NC at LSU before dipping his toe in the NFL and realizing it wasn't going to work for him and going back.

Gruden has never coached a down in CFB and for that matter never dominated the NFL. He's a career .500 coach whose last playoff win was the Super Bowl in 2003. He is one of the most overhyped, overrated coaches I've ever seen. Why some here seem obsessed with him is beyond me.

Gruden is mediocre......period.

He's been a coach in the NFL for 14 seasons and only won 10 games in a season 4 times. He's only had 2 seasons where his team won a playoff game.

He's an overrated bum who is supposedly a QB guru that has never developed a young QB.

Actually it was 3 seasons. 2000 the Raiders won the Divisional round then lost the AFC Championship, 2001 Raiders won the Wild Card round then lost the Divisional, and 2003 the Bucs obviously won it all. Not that it helps his reputation that much.

You mean the Jim Harbaugh of college football. Harbaugh's style of coaching is more suited to the NFL.

Except Harbaugh did great at Stanford, and I see nothing that tells me Gruden would do even as well as Harbaugh has done at Michigan.

The moral of the story ( IF YOU READ THE ARTICLE) is what a highly motivated Athletic Director accomplished in a relatively short period of time because he refused to accept mediocrity.
Name dropping Gruden gets the reactions - there is no consensus on him being the answer.
However, there is no doubt that FULMER is the question!

Its happening!!

Gruden is washed up. Just look at how awfully coached that Raiders game was last night. That was one of the worst displays of coaching I've ever seen in a football game. To the point where it was quite comical.

I don't want Gruden anywhere near UT Football players.

What’s even more baffling is why some on here thought UF he cane here he would kill it.

Lol yeah Gruden doesn't want to recruit. Thats why he wanted to go to the pros again. Saban is a relentless recruiter.

If you watch the game last night, his blunders cost the Raiders the game. Yea, kick a field goal when you could have scored a TD, brilliant. No thanks to Gruden.

Harbaugh had one great year at Stanford, but has a higher winning percentage at Michigan. He did improve each season at Stanford, which is a good sign. I would have liked to see what he would have done over an extended period of time at Stanford. Turning them around in four years was an excellent job, but I am curious if he could have maintained that momentum for several more years.

Harbaugh at Stanford
2007
4-8 (3-6)
7th in conf
No bowl
Finished unranked

2008
5-7 (4-5)
6th in conf
No bowl
Finished unranked

2009
8-5 (6-3)
2nd in conf
Lost Sun Bowl to OK
Finished unranked

2010
12-1 (8-1)
2nd in conf
Won Orange Bowl against VT
Finished as 4th ranked team

Overall Stanford record 29-21 (21-15 in conf) and 1-1 in bowl games. Overall Michigan record 49-22 (69%).

He had future first round pick Andrew Luck at Stanford to make him look good.

Pretty sure he gets credit for recruiting him too. And if we're going to start knocking coaches for having great players, I guess your list of great coaches is pretty tiny.

Stanford hadn't had a winning season since 2001, and he inherited a 1-11 team.

Saban’s last game coaching professionally;
the great predictor of future college success...

You are probably right but Michigan is only competitive when they can raid Ohio and Pennsylvania for players. Between Harbaugh's eccentricity, Franklin, and tOSU's recent stability... he doesn't have the players to win. ND being better doesn't help him either.
