The Best Football HC We're Hired in 30 Years ...

I've studied the schedule closely and only game I'm torn about is Alabama next year. Otherwise I see 11 sure wins. The thing about Alabama is they are breaking in a lot of new starters. But when it comes to that October clash, you never know what can happen. I was telling someone today historically Tennessee v. Alabama is the biggest sporting event in all of sports. Bigger than the Masters, the Super Bowl and the Kentucky Derby. I think now with Coach Huepel it will regain its place as THE biggest event in all of sports starting next year. GO VOLS!

I had a long response written out, but I am now going to retract it and say I am open to this hire. I have looked at most of the coaches out there who have had 10 win seasons and most of them had dips and some of them had poor results before their run either at the same school or other schools. I think what is important here is whether or not we like him, what staff he assembles, whether or not he can recruit, how his players play for him and whether or not he can compete in games. This hire will take time. Tennessee is in the dumps. No one wanted to come here even at 7 million a year. Let’s see what happens.
You've made some valid points and I agree....we just need to give a coach time. A lot of schools with a history of winning programs( Texas/Auburn/USC/..and more) have struggled to find the right coach. The year before LSU won the NC year before last there was grumbling about Coach O.

LOL. A "downward trajectory." He inherited a 13-0 team.

What was he supposed to do? Go 14-0 in Year 1, 15-0 in year 2, and 16-0 in Year 3?

He went 28-8 in 3 years. And 2 of his losses last year were decided at the last second. He had some of the most prolific offenses in CFB. And frankly, Steele is probably an upgrade at DC
I respect you a lot as a poster , but I feel as if the temptation here is to rationalize the fact that he went from 12-1 to 6-4 over a three year span. It is a legitimate concern period.

That 6-4 team was the number 2 team in the FBS in total offense per game...only Bama was better. We were 102 in the FBS in total Offense last year. He pulled that off with not one 4 star or one 5 star player on the team! This guy can coach QBs and Offense. Everywhere he’s been the Offense has been dynamic. Check his stats back at Missouri...they lead the SEC in total Offense. Lastly, his last 3 teams would have boat raced the Vols...again all 2 and 3 star players!

The concern is still there even though you raise some fair points.

Kind of what the forum is for lol not your Faulkner novels lol

No, dumb hot takes are what you text on your phone to your chuckle buddies. You can actually use your brain and more words to post on this Forum... I mean if you’re capable.

Seriously. I'm not saying I know how Heupel will automatically work out but this is easily our best hire on paper since Majors. Other hires:

Fulmer. Unproven OC.
Kiffin. Failed NFL coach.
Dooley. Failed G5 coach.
Butch Jones. Semi-successful G5 coach.
Pruitt. Unproven DC.

Heupel's probably the most accomplished of the entire bunch. He's had some of the best offenses in all of college football for the past 3 years and had a great track record as OC and QB coach before that. If he gets Jeff Lebby as OC (which isn't a sure thing), we'll probably have the best offensive staff in the nation. If we keep Kevin Steele as DC, we'll be in great shape with the staff.

No, things won't be turned around in Year 1 or even Year 2, with all the crap disadvantages the new staff will have to start with (transfer portal, potential penalties), but this is a reasonably good hire and a "great hire" by "Tenesseee over the past 2 decades" standards. One thing I do like is that Heupel is likely committed for the long-term; he didn't come here with the current situation to just be here for 2-3 years.

Feel like Battered Vol Syndrome is taking over for some on here. No, it's not a "Home Run Hire", but it's a solid double and maybe we get lucky in 3-5 years and he'll round home plate. At a bare minimum, this is a big upgrade at HC.
No. Not enough known about him to say hes better than Kiffin. You sure as heck can't say best offensive staff in America, especially when you look at Bama. He also showed signs of regression yr 3, was fired from OU for relatively stale and predictable playcalling. This was the safe, fall-back option for White. He was affordable and UCF fans seemed ready to get rid of him, similar to OU. Definitely not a top choice as White said. Stop fooling yourselves.

LET'S DO THIS!!

I love the hire I believe offensively Tennessee will be rocking and rolling in the coming years. Also I don't know why anybody in there right mind would wanna hire lane kiffin back after how he left I mean honestly I don't see all this upside he brings honestly

He's not 'cute' enough for these morans

What part of "NCAA sanctions" do you not understand?? As a program that's about to get hit with NCAA sanctions, we CANNOT hire a coach who was fired from his previous job because of NCAA sanctions! Why are some of you choosing to guard your ignorance on this matter?? Freeze is not an option!

I don't know how many times it's been said and repeated ... but the blinders just stay on @ this.

But, his job at Mizzou was OC. He did his job exceptionally well there.

And I was just responding to a dolt who incorrectly tried to diminish that accomplishment.

To your point, I would agree to an extent.
But, OTOH, the success at Mizzou doesn’t mean he will fail at UT either.

I agree that it has little bearing on what he can accomplish here. Overall, I wanted more, but I will hope for the best. Maybe he’s awesome and that would be awesome.

Playing advocate here he has a touch of the Butch Jones (coattails success) trajectory to him. Not saying it is my pitch, but it is what many will cite. I do think if Butch had been as good an OC as pitchman he would have been a successful coach here.

Honestly, I don’t think Heupel is a home run hire either. Maybe a single or double.

I’ve just been playing “devil’s advocate” against various folks that I thought were dismissing him today.

If Heupel can just move our program forward in the SEC & restore some Vol cred around the country, that will be a win for us IMO.

Fingers crossed, Brother!
