The Best Football HC We're Hired in 30 Years ...

Feel like Battered Vol Syndrome is taking over for some on here. No, it's not a "Home Run Hire", but it's a solid double and maybe we get lucky in 3-5 years and he'll round home plate. At a bare minimum, this is a big upgrade at HC

BVS is a real condition and the only remedy are a min of 7 wins/season starting in year 3. Won't see year 4 if can't produce 7 wins. VN just not that patient.

He!! yea!

I can't predict his success or lack thereof based on his record at UCF. Scott Frost was highly successful there before going to Nebraska. There, he has fizzled out going 4-8 in 2018, 5-7:in 2019 and 3-5 in 2020. And Nebraska doesn't play Alabama, Florida and Georgia every year.

In his three seasons at UCF, Heupel was beaten twice by Fickell, but he also beat Kiffen twice (with the aid of a much better roster though).

In total he lost 8 games in three years at UCF by 58 total points (average 7.25). I don't think he could do that in this league.

I don't want to be negative but I'm refusing to allow my hopes or expectations to be raised.

At this point, I'm just glad we didn't have a total disaster of a search but it's very blah to me.

I hope he knows that we need energy and excitement. A JEREMY PRUITT DEMEANOR WON'T GO OVER WELL. Don't think you can act like Saban. We are not Alabama. We need excitement like slamming RedBulls and taking off our shirts and dancing. Excitement like painting our chests orange and acting like a crazed fan.

He’s kept the momentum going? He just went 6-4 and several UCF articles were talking about him fighting for his job in 2021 .

“Fighting for” his job? Don’t believe everything you read. His former boss at the job he was supposedly fighting to keep, just hired him for a higher profile job! LOL You can file those “several UCF articles” in the FAIL section.

Sorry, but the lack of logic with some of this negativity needs to be called out.

Don't ever go to Vegas guy. Have you seen who has already left? Saban couldn't win 7 games here next year. We are in far worse shape roster wise than Bama was in 2007. Beldar took a sledgehammer to the program and the NCAA is right behind him

I said barring lots of starters lost. Who of the starters have left?

A
... and people are complaining.

Seriously. I'm not saying I know how Heupel will automatically work out but this is easily our best hire on paper since Majors. Other hires:

Fulmer. Unproven OC.
Kiffin. Failed NFL coach.
Dooley. Failed G5 coach.
Butch Jones. Semi-successful G5 coach.
Pruitt. Unproven DC.

Heupel's probably the most accomplished of the entire bunch. He's had some of the best offenses in all of college football for the past 3 years and had a great track record as OC and QB coach before that. If he gets Jeff Lebby as OC (which isn't a sure thing), we'll probably have the best offensive staff in the nation. If we keep Kevin Steele as DC, we'll be in great shape with the staff.

No, things won't be turned around in Year 1 or even Year 2, with all the crap disadvantages the new staff will have to start with (transfer portal, potential penalties), but this is a reasonably good hire and a "great hire" by "Tenesseee over the past 2 decades" standards. One thing I do like is that Heupel is likely committed for the long-term; he didn't come here with the current situation to just be here for 2-3 years.

Absolutely agree!

Kiffin was easily more qualified and in demand than Heupel is. This is pretty similar to Butch, a guy who inherited a great team and left it pretty good
Literally close to 100 D1 programs have concluded that they do not want Lane Kiffin to be their head football coach since he was left on the tarmac by USC. He is only in demand by nearly the same number of posters on this board.

I was referring to at the time we hired him, which is what this thread was about, but some others seem to have read this the same way you did

Look. I'm hopeful that he'll get a great staff together and put an exciting product on the field. I think he's the most successful coach since Butch.

Heupel trended downward in his 3 years at UCF.
Butch trended up in his 3 years w/ the Bearcats.
REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY

I have friends on faculty /staff at UCF who are stakeholders in the football team. They are not happy with losing White or Heupel.

If you hop on message boards to guage a situation, you're only getting a portion of the story. It's the most emotionally invested and least regulated of the fanbase. People close to the situation whose jobs actually involve working with the athletic department and football team have a different take - and they're not the ones going nuts on message boards.

I predict 7 wins the first year barring several starters transferring, or becoming ineligible. Which will be a great improvement.

LOL!!!! I can't believe what I am seeing!! You believe in the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus, too? 🤣🤣🤣

A downward trajectory and we’re supposed to be happy with it? Should’ve been Freeze.

Freeze had a .609 winning percentage at Ole Miss. His BEST year he had 3 losses. His "brilliant" offensive mind produced one single year of great offense (40.8 per game) with his second best being 32.6. As I've said elsewhere, I'm a little underwhelmed after White's build-up, but I'll come back here in 5 years to compare what Heupel does to what Freeze did at Mississippi. I have very little doubt his record will be better; and even less doubt that his worst offensive year will top Freeze's second best. By season 3 we'll be averaging between 37 and 45. It is, however, the defense that will tell the tale. Steele or someone at his level will mean a significantly better record than Freeze.
