The Best Football HC We're Hired in 30 Years ...

a one off year doesnt mean anything in the grand scheme of things...and even then he was competitive in every loss and scored more than 30 pts more often than not

He was 4th in his conference in 2019 as well after taking over the #1 team, so while the overall record was fine I wouldn’t dismiss it as “one off year”

- He won the conference in year 1
- finished 2nd in his division because of a ref's call that overturned a stop on 4th and 1 that would've given his offense the ball in great field position in 50 seconds to go down 3 against Tulsa.
- then in year 3 the off year

It's just not exactly going from 12-1 to a bunch of losing records for several seasons

"What a great AD hire!"

one week later.....

"What a terrible hire by our AD!"

Which one is it? We have a bunch of keyboard heroes and experts in this fanbase who are completely ignoring the state of this football program.

I, for one, and not going to pretend that I know what's going to happen but at the very least we should be more fun to watch while we see how it all pans out.

It's not about morality. It's about being pragmatic about the situation. Based on his history, Freeze is a risk because if he repeats his behavior here while we are on probation and gets caught, you can truly kiss our program goodbye. We just cannot take that risk.

We have finished dead last in the SEC East 2 of the last 4 years, we are on our 5th coach since 2009, we are on our 4th AD, since 2009, we are headed toward probation for sure (so says our chancellor), we have lost 21 players to the portal since September. I don’t know how you define “kiss our program goodbye”, but I think we are there. We don’t know any coaches who are squeaky clean. Freeze would know he would be scrutinized by everyone and be watched by everyone.

Yes I agree, the last 12 years have sucked. Do you want to add 12 or more years on top of that? Because that's what we could potentially face if we hired Freeze and got caught cheating while under probation. The first step to getting yourself out of a hole is to stop digging! You put down the shovel! It's critical now, more than ever that our administration make SMART decisions for our program. Not going after Freeze is a SMART decision, considering our situation.

Peter Burns:

Vols needed 4 things in the hiring of their next HC.

1) Someone offensive minded
2) Someone who can develop QB's
3) Someone who has head coaching experience
4) Someone to work closely with the AD during unforeseen times

Heupel checks every single one of those boxes.

Peter Burns seems to have left off "winning games" and "being competitive in the SEC".

“The Best Football HC We’ve Hired in 30 Years...”

What a low bar that is. Someone will always be best of the worst 😂

It wasn’t because of a ref’s call. He didn’t win his division because he lost to Cincinnati, and had they beaten Tulsa, they’d still be in the exact same spot. These are the types of posts that are legit carbon copies from when Butch was hired - “he got worse, but not THAT much worse especially if everything that went wrong had gone right instead”

Tulsa was also a 4-8 team that went 2-6 in conference that year, so pretty damning that we’re having to try and make excuses for a loss to them because “it was close”

If he says ARIGHT after every sentence like he did in one video I watched of him I'm going to be extremely pissed.

... and people are complaining.

Seriously. I'm not saying I know how Heupel will automatically work out but this is easily our best hire on paper since Majors. Other hires:

Fulmer. Unproven OC.
Kiffin. Failed NFL coach.
Dooley. Failed G5 coach.
Butch Jones. Semi-successful G5 coach.
Pruitt. Unproven DC.

Heupel's probably the most accomplished of the entire bunch. He's had some of the best offenses in all of college football for the past 3 years and had a great track record as OC and QB coach before that. If he gets Jeff Lebby as OC (which isn't a sure thing), we'll probably have the best offensive staff in the nation. If we keep Kevin Steele as DC, we'll be in great shape with the staff.

No, things won't be turned around in Year 1 or even Year 2, with all the crap disadvantages the new staff will have to start with (transfer portal, potential penalties), but this is a reasonably good hire and a "great hire" by "Tenesseee over the past 2 decades" standards. One thing I do like is that Heupel is likely committed for the long-term; he didn't come here with the current situation to just be here for 2-3 years.

Feel like Battered Vol Syndrome is taking over for some on here. No, it's not a "Home Run Hire", but it's a solid double and maybe we get lucky in 3-5 years and he'll round home plate. At a bare minimum, this is a big upgrade at HC.
Hell yeah i agree!

Exciting hire? Maybe not for everyone, but with the recent series of stupid events? And with the likely limitations Tennessee will be facing in the aftermath of this investigation? At least we have a coach willing to take it on.

Also, “a ref’s call overturning a stop” means replay clearly showed they didn’t get the stop. This is an excuse within another excuse for a loss to a bad team (that wouldn’t have helped win the division anyway)
