The best and worst field goal kicker in TN history

I respect Daniel Lincoln, but he just didn't perform when it counted (outside of his freshman year, exluding the SECCG). I don't think his stat sheet is going to look that bad, but he just lost too many games. Lincoln is the Arian Foster of the kicking game.

Exactly! We were driving the ball down their throats, and he lets 20 - 30 seconds run off. We could have gained another 15+ yards, and Lincoln could have put more lift on the ball rather than hitting a line drive that starts out lower. I remember I was calling Kiffin every name in the book while that time ran off.

It really made no sense. Don't understand it to this day. Guess he was playing for the moral victory.

Greatest that probably 99.99% on this board never saw play, myself included: George Cafego
My childhood favorites would be Allen Duncan or Fuad Reviez.

Worst: Burke I was sitting in the AU student section and knew he was going to miss it....Took a water bottle off his head from a teammate for his effort.

So Lincoln's gonna be one of the best kickers in the NFL?

Poor comparison IMO

Jeff Hall would get my vote for best. I'm going to age myself with this, but my vote for the worse would be Ricky Townsend.

What a joke this thread is. Lincoln was a good kicker for us. He played through an injury so he had a rough patch. Maybe he shouldn't have played at all in 2009, then you'd prolly of called him a vagina. Didn't he kick a game winner vs South Carolina that put Tennessee in the SEC Championship?

He said that we were getting phantom penalties against us all game, and that he didn't want to get another one and take us out of field goal range completely, which I understanded at the time cause I was drinking "the kool-aid" but Kiffin I think had that Us vs the World mentality, which is why he got so heated with slyve.....

TN has been fortunate to have successful kickers since I've been a fan (early 80s) for the most part. I guess I define successful as someone who doesn't stick out as preventing the team from winning. Lincoln is one of the few which I remember as causing the team a loss or two. This could be because he was recently on the team, he's received a lot of publicity across the message boards, or because he was actually less than desirable as a Vol kicker.

On the other side of this question, the Reveiz brothers have always been my favorites.

Kiffin was a parinoid schizophrenic. I remember him saying that he wasn't going to keep running the drive and let the officials call some penalty and rip him off.:ermm:

He may have been onto something. If you can handle the agony of watching it again, look up the fieldgoal block on youtube and watch the umpire behind Alabama's line point to the ball for Julio. At first I thought he was just throwing a bag at the ball but I think he was pointing at the ball.

You've lost your mind. When a kicker hits a 300+ lb lineman in the arm pit, well, his aim is a little suspect.

My favorite two kickers of all time would have to be Fuad Reveiz and Jeff Hall. What clutch kickers and Hall was so respected by his team that he was a captain on the 98 NT team. Now the worst kicker that has ever put on the Tennessee uniform is hands down Daniel Lincoln. Honestly how many games did this kid cost us in his career. He missed two field goals against LSU in 2007 that were chip shots. He missed the field goal against UCLA in 2008 in overtime. He missed three field goals against Bama in 2009 to cost us the game. He misses an extra point against UNC that would have won us the game. I think I could go on in on but you get the point.

Vols lost by 7 to LSU in '07. You do the math.

In order to get to that game, though, Lincoln hit game-winning kicks against South Carolina and Vanderbilt as well as 4 FGs vs. Mississippi State. He did all of this as a freshman.

Just to get to overtime vs. UCLA after the Vols' defense allowed the Bruins to march down the field at will late in the 4th quarter, Lincoln nailed a 47-yarder with no time left.

The Bama game in his junior year - injured. If he couldn't physically execute a kick (which he clearly couldn't), the coaches shouldn't have had him out there, or at least they should've attempted to advance the ball closer to the uprights. Did a nice job on that perfectly-executed onside kick that gave the Vols a chance to win, though.

Senior year - 90% on field goals. Ninety. 5-5 from 40+.
Not converting the extra point in the bowl game hurt, but merely gave UNC the option of tying the game with a FG. If they had been down 4, there's no way anyone can say with any certainty that they don't go down there and score a TD to beat the Vols in regulation.

So let's be fair. The guy hit 80% on FGs during his career. He was an Academic All-Everything throughout his career. He represented the Vols well. If he's the worst kicker Tennessee's ever had, then U.T. must be Kicker U.

Fair points and well-defended. I guess a problem I had was he had a good freshman year and then never seemed to progress IMO. He picked it up last year, but 90% or not, I never felt confident with Lincoln kicking the ball.

I liked Lincoln, but I agree that he did not progress. However, at the time, I would take him over Palardy, but of course that's like taking a gun to the head vs. in the mouth. To me, Lincoln never could get his head straight once he got injured. He came in with the balls-to-the-wall freshman attitude, had success, fell away from that, and never got it back. I don't know what all was up with him, maybe there was a really big issue that we don't know about. Remember how everyone was ragging Lofton, saying he was terrible blah blah blah his senior year, and we come to find out he had cancer? Point is, Lincoln was a good college kicker with a few inopportune moments. And now last I heard he's still trying to become a Navy SEAL, so I have the utmost respect for the man.

I was thinking the same thing especially with Lincoln missing two earlier on. I think he would have probably kicked it low as well. I've never seen a kid kick the ball as low as Lincoln. He had four or five extra points blocked by being low. Just a ****ty kicker!

Im surprised by the lack of James Wilhoit love on here. He's easily my favorite Vol Kicker of all time...

Yes we lost by 7 but if he hits both those chip shots we dont have to have a touchdown at the end of the game. When Ainge threw the int we were in field goal range and could have kicked the game winning field goal.
