What makes that sport so unique is that generally speaking, the team/player that begins the action of a play has an advantage. The WR over a CB in football, the ballhandler over the defender in basketball, the pitcher over the hitter in baseball. If the player that begins the action is "on" at any given time, it is hard for the other player to have consistent success, even if they are playing very well themselves.

With a goalie in hockey though, that isn't the case.
