The Atlanta Braves - Hello darkness my old friend

Stared at the TV in disbelief waiting for something else to happen but not knowing what. Only other time I’ve felt that way was watching Hurricane Katrina coverage in New Orleans. Just staring at the screen hoping to see something else or to wake up and it be a dream

Yeah 9/11 and seeing the whole city of New Orleans under water is the only two things I can think of where I couldn’t speak watching it (even being so young). My grandparents could all tell us the exact day of Kennedy’s assassination but that was different time without 24/7 news cycle.

I could be completely wrong on that. I do know they evacuated my dad’s office. I apologize.

No worries. I do remember a lot of people being especially concerned in the wake of the attacks about Oak Ridge somehow being a target, but we definitely never had to leave town. The only real inconvenience I remember was really long lines at some of the gas stations because everybody was topping off that afternoon in case something crazy happened and they needed to get out in a hurry.

Don’t feel bad, I had woken up early to study for a test in my junior year at UT (Sterling Heights apartment complex, to be exact). Roommate called me into his room to see what was happening and for some reason it just didn’t sink in how truly awful and historical it all was. As I rode the bus to campus it really started to settle in. Got to class and they said we could stay and talk about it or leave, jumped right back on the bus and headed back to my apartment and don’t think I moved from in front of the tv again for days.

9/11 is the only event I can describe where it feels like centuries ago at times and also feels like it happened last week at times. I don’t know if anyone feels the same way

Just in this thread today i said it doesn't seem like 17 years ago, then i was looking at a list of movies on netflix this afternoon and it said "Pearl Harbor (2001)" and i thought damn that's an old ass movie......oh wait.

Understand exactly what you mean.

For anyone too young to really remember having lived through the whole experience, not only was the day itself completely surreal, but within the context of our current political climate, so was the complete and total unity of the ENTIRE country in the weeks and months that followed. The first game at Neyland against LSU a couple weeks afterwards is still one of my all time favorite games I’ve been at. It was amazing.

I would add the 1992 LA Riots to that list.

Makes you wonder, if it happened today would the left and right unite or would they try to blame each other somehow?

The one thing I’ll never forget ab 9/11 actually happened ten years later. It was senior year in government class and we had a girl (my graduating class had 11) that was from New York, was in New York like less than five miles from WTC and we never talked with her about it before mostly because we never put it together and thought to ask.

That day we had a discussion just about 9/11 and America since and I think someone said something to the effect of the War on Terror seems pointless at the time or something about Islam I can’t remember what. Nothing disrespectful but our classmate just when she heard that and got incredibly emotional on multiple levels, and actually told us her and her family lost people they knew. And it was the first time I actually met someone who was there and experienced it and how much loss was actually suffered through it. I think we see the videos and pictures and documentaries and sometimes I forget by just the shock of it all how many people lost their lives and how many families suffered because of it.

I honestly do not want to start a political debate but look at what happens with mass shootings today (not taking any sides) so I don’t know. First, I hope we never see anything like that again but I really hope we could overcome that if needed.

I'm with you, but with the mass shootings it's so split, most people come together but others point fingers and blame people, on both sides.

2nd grade. I didn’t know what happened until I got home but all I understood was people stole some planes. Didn’t really understand until I saw footage on TV a couple years later.

The bombing campaign and invasion are the first things I can remember seeing on tv as it happened.

This left right thing isn't new though. At the time, we were just removed from a razor thin win by George W Bush that had people seriously divided... yet everyone came together. I suspect the same thing would happen now.

Was it really this bad though? I hope you're right that we'll never be too divided to unite.

I'm telling you...it was crazy: a Presidential election that took a month to figure out and ended up in litigation followed by months of one side trying to claim a mandate and the other side trying to delegitimize the result.

I feel like this is easily the most aggressively polarized the country has been in my 28 years. People seemed to be divided then but there wasnt the sheer amount of vitriol that there is now and unwillingness to try and find middle ground.
I agree about the vitriol, but I think the division has largely been there since the 90s.
