If you truly think there are only 1200 cases in the US, you are sorely misled. There have been multiple reports throughout the country of lack of testing kits, not to mention the loads of people with symptoms that don't even go in to get tested for fear of inability to pay for medical expenses or not getting paid from missing work.

Just got back from Sam’s Club in Tampa. I arrived early so that I could get my shopping done before it got too busy. Plan did not work. The parking lot was already full. No carts either.
When I got in the store, I noticed that no one had toilet paper. It was already gone.

Football cancellations would occur, which would decimate the AD’s budget for all sports, season ticket holders would likely be out donation money, and if it lasted long enough, major changes would have to occur to the NCAAs eligibility and scholarship limits.

We're seeing a lot of over-reaction to this, IMO. And on some level it's understandable, because fear is based on what we do not know, What we do know is that most patients have mild to no symptoms and it seems to be dangerous to only a small percentage of those who contract it. And we know why that is (age and pre-existing health conditions).

People are afraid there may be more cases than we're being told and they're afraid they're going to catch it and die. Ironically, more cases would suggest that it's even less lethal than we already believe. More cases and the same number of deaths lowers the morbidity rate.

Maybe people aren’t afraid of catching it and dying but catching it and passing it along to someone who has a compromised immune system. Or an elderly person who can’t fight it.

It's going to be a really slow spring and without sports. I not a NBA, NHL, or MLB fan but I do like to keep up with the baseball Vols and the Lady Vols softball. I was really looking forward to maybe making the super regionals again and maybe the CWS, especially after the strong start.

That would be an astoundingly low number, statistically-speaking. The death toll for the entire country of over 330 million is less than 50 last I heard. And that number would be a lot smaller if it hadn't somehow been exposed to a bunch of nursing home patients. The people who are over-reacting don't seem to take any of those facts into account.

We will look back at this and see how utterly ridiculous we as a nation succumb to media hype. I predict we will see the swine flu back in 2011 was much more deadly and we didn't cancel hardly anything that I remember. The media was keeping a lid on hysteria and praising government officials who didn't shut down anything.

I personally would probably not go to a large event because I am a senior citizen. But no reason for young healthy people to shut down their lives because of the hype. Many more people will be hurt including the people who work the events, restaurant employees, travel industry employees than taking a risk on continuing living our lives. They lose their income which is probably what the media wants anyway.

Call me selfish for wanting to watch Vols basketball, March Madness and Braves Baseball, but I really tire of "experts" running our lives and deliberately take the joy out of living.

Sorry you feel this way....but plenty of these “young” individuals have older parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or other immune compromised family members that they could spread it to, which could suffer significant illness. And yes, your way of thinking is the selfishness we don’t need right now.

Maybe they’re reacting exactly how they feel they should. It’s simply your opinion ppl are overreacting. I’ve heard plenty of doctors, scientists, health organizations say the opposite (I know, I know - “fake news”). But if some, including companies and sports leagues, decide to take every precautionary measure in order to minimize the impact of this then let them.

Perhaps it is you who is overreacting about ppl/companies/leagues that, in your opinion, are overreacting.

The voice of reason. Thank You. Right now the number of cases is strictly guesswork; since there has been minimal testing. With cases popping up everywhere, we know there are many more infected. Dr. Ian Lipkin stated that we should be using blood Plasma from recovered patients to treat the new cases. One donor's plasma could treat three people; and that would slow this thing to a halt by end of Summer. I'm sure you are familiar with Lipkin.

Ah, the ever popular "I know you are but what am I?" gambit.

Firstly, I didn't say anything about "fake news". But it is a fact that this particular illness is getting a lot more sensational coverage than other illnesses that had more severe symptoms, affected more people and resulted in a higher death toll. We didn't shut down half the country and threaten the economy over them. We didn't see people rushing to the stores to clear out the shelves. As an interested party, I'm just curious why. I think we should all ask questions, because we all have a vested interest in this. And I don't think any of us wants the cure to end up being worse than the disease itself.

You know what? You're right. I guess I was hoping someone might interpret my points as an implied question. Then maybe they might want to try to give me an answer that would help me understand why the reaction to this illness seems so disproportional when compared to previous illnesses. I thought I was being clear, but maybe I wasn't.

We can't assume anything with this insanity going on. It seems that a 1% mortality rate is what we are looking at with this virus. We are going to have to decide at some point if we are going to stop the whole world for a disease with such a low mortality rate or we just live with it like we live with flu, cancer, and every other kind of disease any of us could get.
