Not even close. 16 would be the correct number.
Thank you for this analysis. So nothing happened yesterday that Texas needed - so Texas is not going to make the playoffs. I expect the top 12 to have the following teams
1. OSU
2. Indiana
3. Georgia
4. Texas Tech
5. Oregon
6. Ole Miss
7. A&M
8. Oklahoma
9. Notre Dame
10. Alabama
11. BYU
12. Miami
In the conference games:
The given -
- Big 10: OSU and Indiana
Both are in regardless of outcome
- ACC: Duke and Virginia
Winner is in and knocks out 11
- American: Tulane and North Texas
Winner is in and knocks out 12
These two are the ones that will ultimately impact what happens between the 9 - 11 spots.
- Big 12: BYU and Texas Tech
Winner is in. If BYU were to win, both BYU and Texas Tech would be in.
If Texas Tech wins, BYU is out.
- SEC: Georgia and Alabama
Georgia is in regardless
Bama is in if they win.
If Bama loses, they could miss the playoffs for a second year in a row! Go BYU!
Bama Loses and BYU wins
Bama is probably out as they would be replaced by either the ACC or American conference champ.
Bama wins and BYU loses
Has no impact as BYU in the #11 slot was getting bumped out anyway.
Both BYU and Bama Lose
This is an interesting situation - will they penalize which ever one is in the #10 slot by allowing Miami to move to #10? Or will they just stay with whomever was ranked higher going into the final week?
Please note they set the precedence last year but not penalizing the ACC championship loser.
If both Bama and BYU win, - there has to be movement and that could bump #9 (currently Notre Dame) out of the playoff picture because
- Bama is in
- BYU is in
- The ACC winner is in
- The American winner is in
- Implies whom ever is at # 9 is out.
It will be interesting to see if with the poll this week, the committee protects Notre Dame by putting an SEC school in the #9 spot. They have no reason to switch the position of OU and ND and if that happens then the committee has made the decision that Notre Dame must be included.
To summarize - Texas and Vandy can complain all they want but the teams they needed to lose, won this weekend so they are headed to bowl games.
I mostly agree. Except, and I’m sure people will disagree, I think Bama is in regardless. They set the precedent last year about conference championship game losers. If they were already in, then they stay in. 11 and 12 will be Acc and G5 winners. If BYU wins, they’re in. It seemed to me they actually repositioned ND to be left out if this scenario happens. So nothing happened yesterday that Texas needed - so Texas is not going to make the playoffs. The difference from last year is that one of the could be conference champs is in the #11 spot and only 3 conferences have teams playing in the top 12. Something will have to give if BYU wins.I mostly agree. Except, and I’m sure people will disagree, I think Bama is in regardless. For the life of me I don't get why people seem to be so offended by an expanded playoff. None of the arguments against it or a playoff in general ever made any sense and I don't know why some seem so obsessed with "only a handful of teams should get a chance".
I dislike the potential dilution. 16 teams don't have a legitimate chance to win a Natty. For the life of me I don't get why people seem to be so offended by an expanded playoff. Same as March Madness and there is no where near the whining in that case.I dislike the potential dilution. 16 teams don't have a legitimate chance to win a Natty.
If, per some chance, you get an upset of JMU over Oregon, you've lost out on a good match up between Oregon and Ohio State or someone else and instead you'll almost certainly see JMU get destroyed in the first half in their next game.
In a bigger playoff, an upset may be exciting and give a momentary thrill but you've lost out on a match up that would be more indicative of who are the best teams in the country.
And what if JMU did the magical, unthinkable and actually won the Natty? So they're the best team because they scored a few upsets in a row?
No one would believe that. AP and Coaches polls wouldn't vote that way, hopefully. So what did they win except a tournament they shouldn't have been in?
I also dislike the size of March Madness for the same reason but I'm seldom vocal about it because I understand ALL of this expansion is about money, not "fairness."Same as March Madness and there is no where near the whining in that case.
Agreed. There is no scenario where a group of 5 team is running the table and winning a championship.I got it all along, I'd just like better quality football (and basketball) in the tournaments as a fan.
CFP, NCAA, and ESPN would like more money.
I'm old. I know which side is going to win that situation.
Yeah, I get it completely and there's no denying from a "how do we get more money and more eyeballs" viewpoint which is the way business SHOULD look at it. They're doing great at their jobs.Agreed. There is no scenario where a group of 5 team is running the table and winning a championship.
In that sense they don't belong at all. Most years the ACC and Big 12 have no shot.
But those guys are not going to get left out. So in order to get the 2nd, 3rd place team in the Big 10 or SEC a spot we got tournament expansion.
