Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp says full football schedule could occur with Oct. start

That seems pretty ambitious. The full slate that is, considering how much goes into scheduling for a football weekend. If they somehow pull this off I don’t ever want to hear again about scheduling OOC a decade in advance .

That likely implies that they anticipate no classes next fall. Because, if you start classes on time, then you can start football on time.

So, they can cancel classes, but can’t give up that football revenue.... The modern college administrators are an absolute joke.

I still don't think they're playing, but, yeah, I'd think a semi normal rotation in conference slate would be about right if you cancel the cupcake games, that, by the way the cupcakes now desperately need the payout, and larger schools probably not wishing to pay out $500K for a W...maybe one OOC. Oklahoma in October would be sweet.

I’m in the line of thinking of that we should be in a constant state of reassessment every 4-6 weeks to see where we are. I’m still holding out hope that the season will take place and that a lot positive changes will happen in the next few months .

An abbreviated slate is better than no games at all, but you’re right that the small schools really need these big payouts to fund their athletics programs. One thing is for sure, no AD has this sort of thing figured into the budget.

I’m guessing they will find a way to do online courses or hopefully even bring the students back . I can’t even imagine what life on campus will be like the first couple of weeks that the students return. The level of party will be at an all time high.

You can have classes remotely - can't play football remotely.

Rightly or wrongly, there's too much at stake to not play the games. They will find out a way to play them one way or another...whether by pushing the start date back, behind closed doors, or something else.

I love college football as much as anyone, but isn’t this the proverbial tail wagging the dog?

I also wonder how they can seat the fans if they are so concerned that they can’t have real classes. I just don’t see how you can jam folks in like sardines if you also deem it unsafe for students to be in a classroom.

Also, what about the health of the players? Tackle football is about the opposite of social distancing.

Interesting questions. I think they will be moot though, because I think things will be getting more normal by the fall.

If they can have in-person classes, they'll probably be OK with fans at the games. If they think they need to to remote classes, I bet they could still play the games with no fans and having all players/staff immediately tested before the game. At some point, the restrictions will loosen up, testing will be more readily available, and while you can't have 100k in a stadium, you could have a couple hundred people on a field together who have all tested negative and have no symptoms.

They are incredibly lucky that this lockdown started in March instead of later this summer or at some point in the fall - they likely wouldn't be able to make up the revenue if it occurred later in the calendar. College football provides 80-90% of total athletic revenue for most universities.

With the great amount of success they've had with online classes since the virus hit I'm sure college classes (for the most part, obviously some classes cant be done on line) will not be cancelled in the traditional sense. And i do think they will try every avenue possible to have some sort of fall/winter football. I certainly could be overly optimistic but would be greatly surprised at a complete washout. Even if the season would be backed up by two months or so. But only time will tell.

I’m just saying that covid will begin ramping up about the same time as well. If anything we should start the season early and finish before cold and flu season begins because that’s when covid will hit again.
We really don't know when it might hit again, or if we still might be dealing with significant issues from what's happening now. Lots of uncertainty and everything is an educated guess at this point.

Oh, a person with definitive knowledge. How cool. Actually, neither you or anyone else has any idea.
No vaccine till 2021 pretty safe bet that there will be no football even without fans. You going to take that chance with 100 players on each team in very close proximity to each other? One player or coach gets infected you have to shut the whole season down just like the NBA did.

That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying no one knows what will happen. You made a definitive statement. You don't know, and I don't know, so making a statement like that this early is rather arrogant and not defensible at this point.
