Tennessee's Hardest Hitters

Raynoch Thompson could lay the wood. Jason Parker could lay the wood. Craig King's hit against that Ohio State player on a kickoff was a nice blast. J.J McCleskey, for his size, could hit hard. The list goes on.
Speaking of Ohio State....we were recently talking about Bill Duff breaking the back of Eddie George on that goal line stand.

Gibril Wilson '03 vs. Kentucky. Vicious hit on a sniffed-out screen play.

That and Al in the '98 Florida Game vs. Doug Johnson. "Full-blown AIDS" sick.

Leonard Little on Freddie "I ate everything in the" Kitchens in the '95 Bama game. I think Kitchens must have a scar under his chin from that one.

The Kitchens hit was a classic. Little also had a monster hit against the Ole Miss QB back in '96, I believe, during a Thursday night ESPN game.

Also, Jamal Lewis drilled Florida DBs twice during the game at the Swamp in 1999. One on a sweep near the sideline, and another on a TD when he jumped at the goal line and straight into the DB's helmet.

Travis Stephans also did his share of laying wood, even though he was an undersized back he'd lay your ass out if you underestimated him.

"Tennessee's Hardest Hitter"

Todd Helton:)

He did lay a sweet block in the UCLA game IIRC. If I'm wrong someone will correct me I'm sure.

I liked Dale Carter and his LB neck guard he wore. Looked like he was always out to kill someone.

Some of my favorites would have to be:

Al Wilson
Raynoch Thompson
Bill Bates (local)
Scott Gaylon (local)
Gibril Wilson
Inky
Reggie White

I have no compunction about saying that Billy Ratliff is, without a doubt, the greatest player to ever wear orange and white on a Saturday afternoon.

To expand, for those of you who are too unfortunate to have heard this story about the UT- Arkansas game in 1998 here it is. Basically, Arkansas was running the clock out with about I dunno 2 minutes left. Ratliffe came over to Fulmer during the timeout, and told him, I'm going to get the ball back, and the next play he knocked the center back into Clint Stoener causing the game-saving and national championship-saving fumble.

Wasn't his knees in awful shape his whole career at UT? That adds even more fire to the legend, if I have that correctly.

Little was a hitter, for his size. He always reminded me of a doberman. I've gotta say Big Al #1. Raynoch was a monster. Big John and Reggie, of course were great, too. But, there's something about the LB position getting that running start that really lends itself to the "headhunter" role.

Man, I hope we get another one of those soon.

Little played linebacker for his first year or two, right? That's when he was a real monster hitter.

Rico McCoy is a headhunter, and from the looks of his recruiting video Chris Donald is too.

As Borat says: "Great Sucess"
