Well, maybe "back" from being a perennial SEC cellar dweller. That's about it. The vols are miles away from being competitive with the power teams of the SEC. Closer than they were a year ago? Yes, but still a long way to go. Looking at the 2020 schedule, it looks like a 8-4 regular season finish, and that is mostly because of a schedule that includes five almost sure wins (Charlotte, Furman (!), Arkansas, Troy and Vandy). It would take some pretty massive strides to get to 9-3. Would take beating one of OK, Florida, Alabama, or Georgia to do so.
If last night's play is an indicator, we won't be nearly improved enough to take on any of those last 4 teams and expect to win. JMHO.[/QUOTE
"""Five almost sure wins", just goes to show we have a great scheduler. We only need six to get to a bowl game. In so far as our ranking in the SEC, it doesn't seem to matter as much as it once did, but going to a Bowl Game does. As long as we are able to keep those responsible for our schedule, we should be a Bowl Game Going Machine!!! It would be bowl game suicide to start scheduling a bunch of the top 25 teams, Furman was a stroke of genius! Not to mention, coache's W-L records (and often their Huge Contracts) depend on winning seasons, yes we need to keep these guys....
