Tennessee under NCAA investigation over use of recruiting hostesses

why aren't they interviewing the hostesses?

Because that wouldn't scare off any potential recruits. My money is on a SEC school filing a complaint with the SEC or leauge office and no way would Slime take up for UT.

What this amounts to if you are a booster, student or just a plain fan of UT you better ot go to any H.S. games where a prospect might be playing.

Anybody ever hear of a "false flag" operation? Hell, Nutt or Meyer either one could hire a bunch of chicks to run around at high school games claimng they are UT hostesses. This is all BS pure and simple and designed to hurt CLK's recruiting. What SEC person worth their salt actually ensure the NYTimes gets a story about an SEC school?

It seems these chicks were promoting business for USCjr alums as anyone who heeded the invitation to come to Tennessee from Columbia would need to buy gas along the way.

Why does maryland have dudes on their squad? Wow. Greives Vasquez makes a lot more sense now.

Please mail that article directly to the NCAA.

This is just pointless. If Lane Kiffin isn't our head coach, this isn't the TOP STORY at espn.com. What a joke.

Driving 3-4 hours on a Friday night to JUST hold up a sign is something that may not worry some of you. The issue isn't necessarily the actions, it's the motive. These girls may have given up their Friday night to do this willingly, but if you think that this is something a college girl REALLY wants to do with their Friday nights, then maybe ignorance is bliss, IMO. I can't fathom that college chicks would willingly go see HS boys in any aspect, unless they were dating of course. Even if they were, holding up a sign that say "Come to UT" isn't something that's smart, and as I said before, Compliance should be chastised for letting something happen like that, even if it is some conspiracy theory that some of you claim that it must be.

It reeks of fear, someone really doesn't want to see Tennessee get back to the top.

Truth. Not sure who though. As dozens have already stated, the big problem is that they're gonna be prodding around our daily recruiting habits and that's never good for any school. ImO the actual hostess issue will turn out much like the JJ thing. If there's no evidence that coaches/school actually INSTRUCTed these girls to do certain things. Well get the benefit of the doubt.who knows

Eric, you're cracking me up. You were complaining about people speculating about the hostesses and posting stuff that could be read and raise questions without any basis...then you post this, which seems to do just that.

The timing of it sucks. It so very obvious it was done to sabotage our recruiting efforts. Whoever it is sucks out loud.

Could they just be fans??? Could they want to see UT land good recruits??? What if I did the same thing because I wanted a kid to come to UT is that a violation?

If you look at the trends over the past century, you'll notice that enrolment in both Nazi organizations and the KKK went down while the NCAA offices grew their investigative staffs. Coincidence?

Don't worry some of the yocals will twist this from hostesses holding up signs to orgies with poor unsuspecting recruits. The only good thing I can see out of this whole thing is visiting UT just moved to the top of every elite recruit's list.

The angle that you suggest is pretty much what was discussed on 104.5 Nashville as I drove into downtown this morning. No real mention of posters/recruiting, just suggestions of intimate companionship as a means of influence.

The one thing that really bugs me about this is the NCAA interviewing prospects, most of who I assume to be UTK commitments. If I'm a 17/18 year old kid and the NCAA comes to my school/home asking questions about alleged prohibited recruiting practices by the school that I am committed to then the obvious and easiest way to extricate myself from any suspicion is to sign with some other program. It could well be that someone is trying to intimidate UTK's prospects to decommit and they've manged to get the NCAA to do the dirty work for them.

Another note of interest. Why hasn't Tennessee invested more money into hiring better and more efficient compliance officers for the football program? It seems like to me that they are having these problems occur because the compliance office hasn't been astute enough to educate their administration, boosters, coaches and staff. While some of the blame has to fall on the individuals, it's the university's compliance office that should be looked at.

Finally, someone that gets it. It's not a coach issue, it's an athletic department failure.

Check UT's record against anybody else's in the SEC not named Vandy; it is outstanding, and that isn't by accident. It is the result of a concerted effort by the University and the good people they employ to stay on the right side of the law, as silly as the law may be at times. There are gray areas, and aggressive recruiting is going to cross into them, but overall UT's compliance is stellar compared to its peers.

You are way, way off base here.

Fanhood should require some level of objective thought.
No, you are free to do this. Now when you go to these games and then turn out to be the same chick that walks you around campus and texts you and so on, questions become more legit. I personally think the investigation itself is a smeer(sp) campaign. However, I do recognize how the stated instances could raise questions. On the other hand I was somewhat unaware of the formality of these groups of hostesses until last night. You'd have to think the NCAA knows we/everyone uses them.

yet there are many college kids (or older) who are routinely messaging these guys on Facebook and going to see them play. If I remember right there was a thread about people getting together and going to see a player and the need to show an "orange" presence. Now if I had gone to that I would be classified as a booster of UT and under the same scrutiny?

The true issue is whether this was done at the direction of the UT staff. No one on here has the slightest clue if that happened
