i think it is freaking hilarious how some people just live to pop balloons. says more about your own lack of a party than a wnba team. a team in nashville named after Pat is next level amazing. it will quickly become of the most loved teams in the league.

p.s. i will buy anything but i would love the summitt blue with orange as their team color. would stand out big time in the league. the yellow and blue image posted reminds me of the chicago storm.
I'm for them having a separate color scheme than the University's. But, I'll agree it is reminiscent of the Sky's colors.

Vince Lombardi says stay in your lane and voice your complaints on the UConn board. Same kids don’t know Vince but will watch next week.
yeah i think this is more about geno having a horrible last name for a future wnba team. LOL

The women’s game will always look to her as the trailblazer.

all these people who never post in the women’s forum getting in their feels bc their beloved town of nashville is considering the idea of obtaining a WNBA team. i hope they do it, would be awesome!! the wnba will continue to grow in exposure.
The league would fold tomorrow if the NBA didn't subsidize it.

Hmm....I think if Paul Brown's name had been Browne, and I had been alive at the time the team was founded, I would have thought "Cleveland Brownes" was tacky.
Another wink-wink reference: The Pittsburgh Maulers of the old USFL were owned by the DeBartolo family - they also owned Century III Mall just outside of Pittsburgh (like many other malls it is no longer there).

Houston Gamblers - Kenny Rogers was part owner.

So far it looks like the effort was unsuccessful.

With the significant financial struggles of the franchise in Connecticut, I think everyone familiar with the process felt like it would be a long shot for a team to go to the city that doesn’t currently have an NBA team. Nashville and Kansas City were well behind the three cities that received a franchise, as well as Miami which was the next up.

It doesn’t even matter if the franchisees are connected to the NBA team in the market (most aren’t anymore), the NBA as a whole uses some of the advertising and in-game/venue sponsor inventory they retain to promote the WNBA franchises in those cities.

FACT: There are a lot of sports fans in Tennessee who are loyal to UT sports teams--enough to fill Neyland Stadium and TBA for men's basketball.

What percentage of those also demonstrate ticket-buying loyalty to the Lady Vols basketball team? ...30%? ...20%? ...10%?

What percentage of those ticket-buying Lady Vols fans are similarly loyal to women's professional basketball? ...40%? ...30%? ...20%? I'm sure the Nashville Summitt business proposal team had to provide those figures.

I'm guessing that whatever those figures showed is the reason why professional sports franchises are so dependent today on corporate commitments to rent boxes and purchase blocks of season tickets.

Speaking just from a graphic design perspective, having gone through the process of designing school and corporate logos that required layers of committees' approval as well as public approval survey results... (Excedrin headaches #73-129, IYKYK)

That yellow and blue logo would benefit greatly by simply making the dot above the "i" in Summitt orange. Though tiny, it would provide a nod, an homage to history, and just enough recognition to allow Lady Vol fans to attach their hearts and memories to the new team's logo.

Maybe UT would allow that; maybe they wouldn't.

I'm just pointing out that using the name "Summitt" only engages the left hemisphere of brains. The orange dot would access the right hemisphere, where emotion and loyalty and value dwell. But committees try to only use their left hemisphere, mistakenly thinking that will keep their decisions "objective."

Okay…how is this relevant?
[I hope this comes across as a sincere response to your question, EZE. I promise, the snark in it is not directed at you.]

Because if a business endeavor can't survive on the money provided by its end users, then in what sense is it a viable business? And if profits aren't coming from your customers... then who is actually taking home the profit?
It's not the majority of the players.

Maybe it's so called venture capitalists, whose business model buys a failing restaurant chain, sucks out all the money until it goes bankrupt, then starts making more profit by leasing the properties that were owned by the chain. Good for the VCs. But bad for the managers and employees of the restaurant that wasn't making enough money from its customers to control its own fate.

I could also put it in "gender social" terms and ask, are powerful men making big money off of the labor and dreams of women athletes? It seems to me that, if the WNBA could become financially independent, then the players would have enough leveage (in principle) to better negotiate for their own self interests.

But I'd ask the same questions of male sports franchises, whose business plans require billions in public tax money to build their venues. It also becomes a question when NBA players--for league financial reasons--publicly bow to the interests of a country whose human rights record is "atrociously questionable."

FWIW, I write this as a "lifelong republican," not a political or social progressive. I believe those categories divide us unnecessarily. We find a lot more common ground when we discuss what's good for us and for our communities.

While the league itself loses money because of the way the NBA accounting works for some of its expenses, more than half of the individual franchises are profitable. Most owners aren’t as concerned with the year to year profitability of the teams (in any sport, for that matter), it’s all about the increase in value of franchises over the long-term, which has proven to be a fantastic investment for several WNBA owners.

After the way the WNBA treated their cash cow, Caitlin Clark, I don't see how they can possibly be successful in the future. They have made it clear it's a black lesbian league, take it or leave it.
Sadly there is a ring of truth to "it's a black lesbian league." With tv money and jersey sales soaring when they promote the best players and even moreso when they emphasize the hetero glam angle for some of the players the OGs see no reason for change at all. You're going to get burly and obviously lesbian women and people running down Caitlin Clark like Whoopi Goldberg who flat out said on national tv it (the WNBA) is a black sport. Personally I like Angela Reese and the Bayou Barbie thing she had sort of branded and enjoy Sophie Cunningham as well as Lexie Hull dong their glam walk when showing up before the games. That sort of thing works for the NBA, having Griner stroll in like Lurch does not help the WNBA.

only time I would ever go to a Tn Summitt WNBA game is if the head coach was the one and only Tyler Summitt himself. Now that would be some history making drama. lol
