Tennessee Still a Premier School?

Let's face it. Serious football teams show up in orange about as often as seventeen year cicadas.

Great read I thought. Hope y’all enjoy if you haven’t read it yet. Comments from The Athletic's Andy Staples show that Tennessee is still a premier college football program
merge if necessary.

Don't know if I agree or not.

He gave the overall record. SEC record for same timeframe is 35-69. More OOC wins than in conference wins.

beginning with Fulmers last season and including staff for this season, here are the number of coaches that have been here.

6 Head Coaches

8 Offensive Coordinators

10 defensive Coordinators

61 Position Coaches

I've lost count of the number of SC coaches. Been a bunch

Be nice if these number stabilize rather than continue to trend in a negative direction.. keep staff around for a while and reverse those conference numbers.

Might still be premier but certainly not stable.

In terms of market value, which is now the most powerful influence in college football, Tennessee is easily top 20. For that reason alone we still have the potential to return to top 20 status in regards to winning. Of course everything’s kind of relative in that regard. The sec might be the only conference left and by default we’d never finish worse than 16th in the country. But at least we’re still playing football at the highest level?

Just read that article and the comment about Butch Jones reminded me that, that guy did so much less with more that it is truly unbelievable! He should have won the East in '15 with what he had on the field and could have helped Dobbs just a little more to help himself!

1)A to Z Nashville is one of the worst sites on the internet. Their "journalism" is embarrassing.

2) The Athletic, however, is the opposite. Solid content there.

I think Tennessee has the potential to explode. We have the pieces. We have the fan support, the facilities, the academics, the geographical location, the tradition and brand. We have many important things to being success. But as Larry said, we lack stability. I THINK that Danny White was a great start to changing that. And I THINK Heupel will be a great start to changing our football program. I think Barnes and Vitello have been great for our basketball and baseball programs, respectively, but we all know football is the cash cow. We have got to get that turned around, and quickly.

I think if we can develop some legitimate stars and solid players in Knoxville, and show the NIL capabilities of coming here, we become an extremely attractive option.

Winning cures all.

Nowhere near premier right now…

potential to return to premier is the question..

we need some consistent positives.

If this coach isn't it, they need to be serious about really getting a top 10 coach. Put all of their feelings, boosters, and budget concerns aside and go hire the best available coach.

Even some of the top premier coaches are not panning out sometime as well. Jim Harbaugh hasn't necessarily blown the socks out of the B1G at Michigan and Chip Kelly is really struggling at UCLA.

Dude, I would take Harbaugh to Kelly over another Dooley, Jones, or Pruitt. There are many other coaches out there that are top-notch and are not struggling.

Honestly I am more upset about the 2016 season than 2015. The amount of talent on that 2016 compared with the rest of the East? A PeeWee level coach could have had that team in Atlanta in December just by sitting back and not screwing things up.

I honestly briefly thought after the UGA miracle that maybe for once, the ball was going to bounce in our direction. That hope ended after the A&M game. Might as well have canned Butch then and saved ourself a season and a half of misery

Ahem.

Good recruiting also cures all
Not really. Butch recruited well. Really well. But couldn't develop talent. Recruiting without development is not as good as average recruiting with development. Give me a coach who can evaluate and develop talent anyday. You do that, and the higher level recruits will come. And if you insert higher level recruits into a system where they will be developed, then you're running a great program. But it doesn't start with great recruiting. It starts with great evaluation and great development. We have had great recruiting here the past decade at times. And yet we are where we are.

I wouldn't argue against you that it's not. Even though I believe it still is.

Because, it can seriously turn around so quickly. Butch for all his faults had people believing in 2016 that we were going to Atlanta and possibly further until injuries and bad coaching took its toal.

The perception can get turned around in a hurry because Tennessee has a super long tradition of winning football.
