-P. BrownDeangelo Gibbs was working with the safeties during the open portion of today's practice.
The Georgia transfer had been with the wide receivers for all of spring before this afternoon.
Obviously Gibbs played defensive back at Georgia so he didn't look too much out of his depth there on the defensive side of the ball.
Just left the open period of Vols practice. At mid-spring, worth noting: UT is remarkably healthy. Eric Gray and Tyus Fields were both full participants during the open period. Beyond Trey Smith, Baylen Buchanan & Kurott Garland, Vols don't have many missing bodies.
-D. UbbenOLB coach Chris Rumph was getting onto slimmed-down Kivon Bennett for his technique and explosion during a drill during the open period. Consider it a "you're going to play, and I very much care about how much you improve in the immediate interim" brand of coaching.
There weren’t nearly as many balls on the turf today during passing drills as there have been recently. There were still a few more than the coaches would like, but overall I thought the quarterbacks and receivers did a better job today. I was particularly encouraged by how Jauan Jennings looked today, and Jordan Murphy looked solid in his route running. Tyler Byrd even had a few really good reps today.
Jarrett Guarantano continues to be the most consistent of the quarterbacks, but I thought JT Shrout made a couple really good throws today.
Both Jacob Warren and Jackson Lowe are getting a lot of attention from tight ends coach Brian Niedermeyer, and I personally think both will see time this year.
-N. RutherfordChris Akporoghene is taking to teaching well, but he’s further behind than I thought he might be at this point.
Bennett and Darell Taylor, who had a nice scrimmage as a pass rusher, later received some tough coaching from Chris Rumph on the same drill.
Tyus Fields is still with the safeties. Also, Baylen Buchanan remains limited and continues to mostly participate without a helmet. Alontae Taylor, who got banged up a bit in the scrimmage, was present.
Offensively, the Vols worked various half-line drills. Jerome Carvin looked to get work with the 1s again. Jahmir Johnson and Wanya Morris rotated at left tackle. Notably, Trey Smith took multiple reps in the drill at left guard, working with Carvin and Johnson. Nathan Niehaus and Marcus Tatum rotated at right tackle. Brandon Kennedy was taking some real reps today, too.
-SimontonVols 2020 quarterback commit Harrison Bailey was in the house Tuesday
It's worth nothing Shawn Shamburger was with the cornerbacks on Tuesday. The Vols are a little shorthanded there with Baylen Buchanan, who didn't scrimmage on Saturday, still going through reps without a helmet, and Kenneth George Jr. suspended.
Jahmir Johnson and Wanya Morris took reps at left tackle. Trey Smith and Chris Akporoghene got work at left guard. Ryan Johnson, Brandon Kennedy, Jerome Carvin and Riley Locklear all got reps at center, with Johnson also getting a couple of reps at left guard. K'Rojhn Calbert got looks at both guard spots with Ollie Lane working at right guard. Nathan Niehaus and Marcus Tatum took the right-tackle reps.
What's notable is Carvin is getting more work at center and Smith continuing to go through light-contact reps, while the 6-foot-5, 330-pound Calbert appears to be emerging as a legitimate factor in the competition for the guard spots.
-P. BrownRedshirt freshman Jacob Warren — a former standout at Knox County’s Farragut High School — arguably drew more praise than the rest for his performance in the drills. That has to be considered a good sign for a player known more for his pass-catching skills than his pure physical and blocking skills coming out of high school.
