How an NIL Loophole is Transforming Texas Tech Into a Softball Powerhouse
Texas Tech softball is coming off a national runner-up finish and has been thrust into the spotlight with a multi-millionaire pitcher in NiJaree Canady. Howeverwww.si.com
It’s no secret how the conversations happen and who is spearheading them. You’re almost in the minority if you don’t hear from your past travel ball coach to gauge interest. Both were/are products of the environment at the time. Travel ball coaches are making calls to players on behalf of coaches to gauge interest as well as NIL influences.
That's pretty bad business finance. You are not WORTH whatever someone is willing to pay you. You are entitled to whatever someone is willing to pay you. You are WORTH the amount of dollar value that you generate for the business you are paid by.Your worth whatever someone is willing to pay you and someone is willing to pay TP that amount.
A team of sellouts is what they are
Jerruh sez, “Hold my beer…”That's pretty bad business finance. You are not WORTH whatever someone is willing to pay you. You are entitled to whatever someone is willing to pay you. You are WORTH the amount of dollar value that you generate for the business you are paid by.
That is why this business model is so difficult to navigate. Boosters with deep pockets are operating a non-profit. They are not looking for profit return. It makes it impossible to accurately determine compensation.

My comment is my opinion I really could care less if you agree with it or not.So you ask your employer to pay you less?
This is a business now. People wanted the players to be paid so now you can’t expect players to play for less especially when some players have the chance to make much more somewhere else.
Your comment is as selfish as you are trying to make them out to be.
Karlyn also has the chance to make money afterwards that others won’t have. She’ll play professionally (supplemental), USA Team and will land deals with shoe/apparel companies like Nike, many more softball related companies & speaking engagements. Hers is a long term game.I can't blame her for taking 350k to play softball that is an enormous amount of money to turn down. Looks like all sports have become bidding wars for the top players. We have three top transfers that all hit really well at their previous schools. A lot of big time players in the portal sure their price tags are enormous.
Tennessee is not going to make softball a priority the only way were going to keep or get the top players is have a booster backup that is into softball. That is what is happening at Texas Tech. They have that person throwing all the money needed out there. Softball Nil share from the settlement appears to be 450 thousand dollars so if they divided that evenly among 25 players that is 18 thousand.
Any player you have that performs well is a Texas Tech target. I am expecting Oklahoma and Texas to become heavily involved as well after they see if Texas Tech gets away with this going forward. I'm sure Karlyn got some big offers more than she is making here. She is a true LVFL for staying.
The LVBC is never going to get the job done. That is absolutely not the way to go forward. It is obvious that softball probably needs about 5 million a season for us to remain competitive. If infielders are going for 350k then top pitchers going forward will be 1 million dollars and above. Looks like schools are going to need a 50 million dollar NIL budget just to stay competitive in the sports of football, basketball men's and women, softball and baseball.Karlyn also has the chance to make money afterwards that others won’t have. She’ll play professionally (supplemental), USA Team and will land deals with shoe/apparel companies like Nike, many more softball related companies & speaking engagements. Hers is a long term game.
It’s also that time of year to look at the LVBC and how it’s ran. Losing Pannell is a major blow to Tennessee but also a reminder that Terri is in over her head when competing against other programs. If she somehow can’t connect with a better NIL model, this is the beginning of the end.
The sad part about this is you are a UT Chatt or ETSU size U and you go out and find a diamond in the rough and work with them and they have a tremendous year. You as that size U need to flush your memory because the player you found and worked with you can't afford anymore. I see U 's just letting their sports teams just go through the motions to keep that student option or just drop sport this size U in this new era of only the wealthy survive.the fallout of this new era of collegiate sports is just beginning -- players (and coaches, too) getting paid ridiculous sums to play a game is one end of it -- the other end is attrition, my local DI school dropped both the baseball and softball teams because they couldn't afford them, look for more of that -- BTW the whole academic aspect of college sports is nothing more than an afterthought these days
Like Maddi Rutan. UTC lost their #1 pitcher Peja to Miss. State, she’s a rising senior. So it’s not just young players, it’s across the board. The sad part about this is you are a UT Chatt or ETSU size U and you go out and find a diamond in the rough and work with them and they have a tremendous year. Pannell was a mystery to me. She had great numbers but just to look at her she looks soft and she doesn't run that fast but she had great numbers although streaky. IMO she just don't look like a lot of athletic great players but numbers don't lie.If Pannell plays as badly for TT as she did for UT this last part of the season then we won't be hurt much. IMHO.
My comment is my opinion I really could care less if you agree with it or not.
If the rumors about Pannell committing to transfer to Texas Tech three months ago are to be believed then no, I don’t like it. It’s shady behavior. And I don’t have to like it or respect it. But good luck to her, I guess.
Texas Tech is throwing around ridiculous amounts of money to build a roster wth transfers. I remember another team from Texas that did that several years ago in football and ended up being the laughing stock of the college football world when it didn’t pan out like they thought it would and their “super team” super failed big time.
