For the last 15 years, Chris Brown has taken her North Buncombe Middle School team to watch a University of Tennessee softball game. The group makes the two-hour drive from Weaverville, North Carolina to Knoxville each season to provide inspiration to the young players. “We felt like putting our kids from a farming community on a college campus could maybe make them go, ‘I could do this. This goal is attainable for me too,’” said Brown, in her 30th season coaching and teaching at the middle school. “They might not all play at that level in college, but they can at least see it’s possible to get a college education.”

The last three years have made an even greater impact on the middle school players because they’ve finally been able to watch one of their own wearing a Lady Vols uniform for the first time. Long before she became one of the top pitchers in college softball, UT junior pitcher Karlyn Pickens was a member of the Blackhawks.

Very glad to see Erin get her two-cents worth in. This experience could pay dividends for us on down the road. Very happy for the Leach twins tonight.

Pretty significant events today other than the bats. Our backup pitchers acquitted themselves really well against an offensively excellent team. Base running was aggressive and effective. Every starter had at least 1 hit and scored a run. Pretty impressive in 4 innings.

Biggest problem is having to beat OU twice in one day.

Talk about a hill to climb.

That lousy-luck home run against us yesterday could very well cost us the national championship. Think about it, if things follow the pattern and we beat UCLA (assuming they lose to Texas Tech) then like you said, we have to beat OU twice. If we had won Thursday's game I think we would have beaten Texas and then OU would have to beat us twice. The situation would have been reversed. I really think the Lady Vols are the best team in the field but events in our favor are going to be hard to come by.

You missed a really fun game starting in the first inning. Hit after hit after hit, then later, back to back home runs by Nugent and McKenna. Who are those guys, ala Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, kept coming up in my mind. It was the TN Team who came to play. KP, then Sage and Nuwer, played well, too. See it if you can, it was absolutely fun.

Oh how sad, in the 10th inning, after getting a runner out at 3rd, Ole Miss walked Oregon’s winning run in, and yes, the crowd was gone, and everyone looked tired, tough loss. They had a great run.
