Tennessee Football is done

It hurts me to say this, but it's time we face the facts as a fanbase. This program will never be relevant in the SEC again. At least not any time soon. Bama and Georgia are getting too many elite athletes at too quick of a pace and Florida is about to be dominant again with Florida State and Miami falling apart along with them having the 2nd best coach in the SEC at the helm. Combine that with having to play 1 other team out of the west every year and a decent South Carolina program that seems to be improving, and it doesn't make for a promising outcome. There's no reason to think recruiting will pick up any time soon either. 7-5 doesn't sell any better than 5-7 when you're going up against Florida, Georgia, Bama, Auburn, and LSU for talent. Not to mention very few proven coaches want to coach in Knoxville. There may be years where an 9-3 finish happens, but there's no possibility of us going to Atlanta over the next 5-10 years unless it's for a kickoff game

@Freak - This is why we need a downvote button, or at least some way to award dummy points....

@codyg10

Kentucky just won 10 games and beat Penn State in this same top-heavy conference that you say we can't rise out of.
Never is a long time. And UGA is not as dominant as you think. Texas proved that. And so did LSU.

and if we do end up 9-3 everyear...then that's pretty dang good!

I think he needed to experience running out on a good job and then getting fired to actually grow up. Some career mistakes you can't fix.

Ha, hard to disagree. That and 9 years later, I certainly think he'd have success here. For reasons that have been discussed over and over here, it won't happen. But I remain a Lane Kiffin fan. That seems to be popular around here, as an obsession with the guy one way or another remains.

@Freak - This is why we need a downvote button, or at least some way to award dummy points....

Honest question....
If he had post this back in 2005 would it still be a dummy post or great future insight?
If in 2028 we are still where we are now is it a dummy post?
Have we had even one We won the SEC east thread since you started this site?
Hsve we had even one We just won the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta bowl thread since you started this site?
Have we had a “single back to back wins over Fl” thread since you started this site?
Have we had a single “back to back wins against Bama” thread since you started this site?
Single Tn finishes top ten thread since you started the site?

I respect you and this site a lot but let’s be honest...

We both know the answer is No.

Everything points to UT being a has-been. I hope I am wrong but it’s not looking good.

And NEVER is a long time. To say the 2nd winningest program in SEC history will never be competitive enough to win the east again is just despair. Calling someone a dummy in this instance (at least to me) is just a "wake up" and don't be so down.

Even if the OP is right... he's wrong. The last thing this program needs is a fanbase resigned and apparently satisfied with failure.

UT will need at least these 3 things to turn it around... and it can be turned around in 3 years.

One, a coach who can find underrated, unrecognized talent and potential.

Two, a coach he can develop talent... and especially guys who weren't quite as blessed physically but have intangibles that make up the difference.

Three, a guy who can get it done on game day so he can make the case to future blue chip players that all he needs is them.

I don't know if that's Pruitt or not. We'll know over the next couple of years.

I mean at least let Pruitt get a few classes in before you declare doom and gloom. We got some good players coming in and some good young talent that's going to benefit from S&C and more development this off-season. It will get better.

So......it takes 5-10 years. I'd bet we have a few decent years, mixed in there. Maybe we beat a few teams we shouldn't. Maybe we get a few high profile bowl games, with good payoffs. Do you even remember how long it took Johnny Majors to get respected? Seven years! But, we were respected and even feared, at times. Those years were filled with great teams, great players, and unbelievably great games and great times. We were good enough to beat any team, on any given day. It was exciting to watch the Big Orange. Before we ever won a NC. Then, Phil took over, a built this program into a juggernaut, that no one (Except Florida) took for granted. It took us a while, to fall to this low point. It will take a while to crawl out. But, when we do crawl out, and The Big Orange bares it claws again, it will be PAYBACK TIME in Tennessee! We will be great again, in the best football conference in the NCAA. I can wait.

Just remember how hard we were rooting to win against Vandy simply for the opportunity to go to a bowl. As fans, that should tell us all we need to know about the state of Tennessee football.

My kids are teenagers and have yet to see a top ten UT team.

Never is a long time but it does feel like until the leaders at UT loss power or die and a new regime comes in nothing is going to change.
