Telander looks slow

If this is trying to disagree the 17 tackles should be considered “showing out”, then question is do you?

Well if we’re being honest he didn’t have 17 solo tackles. They ran the ball 50+ times on top of that. We can pretend he doesn’t blow coverages or get beat in the pass game more often than not. That said, he’s the best linebacker we have for sure. He isn’t close to the best we’ve ever had. Yea 17 tackles is nice but if you watched the game it’s like putting lipstick on a pig. Angel Reese might have 15 offensive rebounds in a game but it’s misleading when it’s because she blew 15 layups.

Those Miss State RBs were absolute dump trucks once they got going downhill.
Right on, and Arky has them as well. You have to attack these types in the backfield before they get going North & South. We need more attacking run support from the back 7 for sure in effort to get them down to the ground and not allow them 7 YAC.

That is lazy analysis.

Carter also had a pass break up in OT on that 4th down. Many hits for TFL.

And he has to fight off big super athletic lineman that outweigh him by 80 lbs to make those tackles much of the time.

I watched him and he was playing harder than anyone out there.

Here's the 247 ratings of our LB corp to date, Its a good group.

Linebacker

Notes: Jordan Burns is the notable absence at linebacker, where the game gave Tennessee a pair of CPU players. The gap between starters Carter and Telander and redshirt freshman Spillman is not as big in real life – the Vols are really high on their top linebacker reserve. Gass was a four-star linebacker recruit, but is starting out as a LEO.

Someone who watches film and knows ball better than me might be able to answer: is Telander's problem more lack of speed or just not being in position?

The natural bias is to assume that because he's a white boy he's a football genius somehow so any deficiency in his game is lack of athleticism. It seems to me like he's more often out of position, where AC seems to have a firmer grasp of things.

Good question. Hes a thumper vs the run either way...especially between the Tackles which will be important vs Arkansas with their big backs. He does struggle in coverage, and sometimes in space like those 2 runs Saturday.

Our Safeties are the real problem. It isnt even close between LBs/Safeties either. Turrentine plays every snap on defense, and he has taken bad angles since he got here 5 years ago. I cannot believe in the 3 or 4 recruiting classes we have had since he got here that we have nobody that can do his job as well or better. Farooq has taken bad angles too...but hes a young guy and its more understandable. We need to hit the portal and grab a couple good Safeties. Its the only position of need honestly on this whole team. They have done OK vs the pass...but been bad vs the run all year. Bad. Seriously.

We have a couple talented kids coming in at Safety in 2026....but we have been saying that for 4 years now and I am a very positive poster. Never been a Nega. We took 6DBs in the 2025 class. Redmon is gonna be a good Corner and probably starts opposite Gilbert next year. Somebody (2 somebodies, minimum) need to step up at Safety next year. Thats the one position we have missed on in the portal repeatedly...AND somehow been unable to develop starting SEC caliber Safeties from HS picks. For 5 years now. We have had Safety problems for 5 years. Straight.
